Event Update For 2018-08-12

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Downpours, flooding to pummel the central US this week

The drought-ridden south-central United States received some much-needed rain early this week from a slow-moving storm. Drought-stricken portions of Kansas and Missouri will continue to reap the benefits of additional rainfall through midweek.

A general 1-3 inches of rain is likely in parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, but areas hit repeatedly by torrential downpours may receive as much as 4 or 5 inches of rain," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Kyle Elliott. [more]

How climate change is making B.C.’s wildfire season hotter, longer, drier

    Scientists fear ‘vicious, vicious cycle’

Wildfires are wreaking havoc in British Columbia. Last year’s fire season was unprecedented: 1.2 million hectares burned in B.C., ten times the ten-year average.

As of Monday morning, there were more than 3,400 firefighters responding to about 600 wildfires in the province and more than 20,000 people impacted by evacuation alerts and orders. There are currently 46 fires of note in B.C., which the B.C. Wildfire Centre describes as fires “which are highly visible or which pose a potential threat to public safety.” More than 140 new fires in B.C. started on Sunday August 12th alone. [more]

Glacier National Park is on fire — and yes, warming is making things worse

This summer has felt like a global warming turning point.

Now, another milestone: Saturday was the hottest day in the history of Glacier National Park, and its first recorded time reaching 100 degrees F.

On the same day, lightning started three fires in the Montana park, which has since been partly evacuated and closed.

Right now, every state west of the Mississippi is at least partly in drought, including Montana. Missoula, the closest major city to Glacier National Park, hasn’t had any measurable rain for 40 days, and none is in the short-term forecast either — a streak that will likely wind up being the driest stretch in local recorded history, beating a mark set just last year. That Escalated Quickly: The Emerging Market Currency Crisis Of 2018 Threatens To Destabilize The Entire Global Financial System

We haven’t seen emerging market currencies crash like this in over a decade, and analysts are warning that if this continues we could witness a devastating global debt crisis. Over the past decade, there has been an insatiable appetite for cheap loans in emerging market economies, and a very substantial percentage of those loans were denominated in U.S. dollars. When emerging market currencies crash relative to the U.S. dollar, lending dries up and servicing the existing loans becomes extremely oppressive, and that is precisely what we are witnessing right now. More AFD cadets suffering from life-threatening rhabdomyolysis cases

While cases of rhabdo seem to become more common, Nicks said it was in this academy that the union started learning more about its effects.

Rhabdo happens when a breakdown of muscle tissues releases a damaging protein that could lead to extreme muscle strain or a heart stroke, among others.

According to NIOSH, rhabdo can happen to firefighters because they're exposed to "heat and prolonged, intense exertion." NIOSH reports death and permanent disability of firefighters have been associated with heat stress and rhabdo.

According to city documents KXAN requested, nine cadets have been sent to the hospital since 2013; five of them were hospitalized for rhabdo. ESD 4 says at least three of its cadets were also treated for rhabdo just last summer.

Italy rescuers search for survivors after motorway collapse kills at least 22

Firefighters searched into the night on Tuesday for survivors and bodies amid the rubble of a motorway bridge that collapsed in the morning in the northern Italian port city of Genoa, killing at least 22.

While that remained the official death toll, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said from Genoa on Tuesday evening that the number would rise. Italy's ANSA news agency reported that some 35 probably were killed, citing fire brigade sources.

A 50 meter-high section of the bridge, including a tower that anchored several supports, crashed down with as many as 35 vehicles driving on it, landing on the roofs of two warehouses, plunging huge slabs of reinforced concrete onto train tracks and into a riverbed.

So far, 16 people have been hospitalized, including 10 in critical condition, the agency said. [more]
