Event Update For 2013-05-29

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2013-05-29 - Enbridge Energy Partners fights for right to reject crude oil with high levels of hydrogen sulfide:
http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/05/29/column-kemp-bakken-pipelines-idINL5N0EA3SU20130529

Quote: "The pipeline operator made the application just three days after the vapours in one crude tank at Berthold terminal in North Dakota were sampled and found to contain H2S at an extremely high concentration of 1200 parts per million, more than enough to be fatal."

Quote: "Hydrogen sulphide is explosive when mixed with air, and can cause severe corrosion to oil field equipment including pipelines."

Note: It can cause corrosion to all steel and concrete, not just oil field equipment...

Quote: "The characteristic rotten egg smell is detectable at concentrations well under 1 ppm, and becomes sickly sweet over 30 ppm, but is dangerously odourless when the concentration rises over 100 ppm because the olfactory nerves in the nose are paralysed. Concentrations of as little as 50-200 ppm can cause shock, convulsions and coma. Inhaling H2S in excess of 1,000 ppm will cause immediate respiratory paralysis followed by death according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ('Report to Congress on Hydrogen Sulfide Air Emissions Associated with the Extraction of Oil and Gas' 1993)."

Quote: "In the next shipping cycle after the April 1 restrictions on competitor pipelines went into effect, there was a dramatic increase to the proportion of crude tendered to Enbridge North Dakota with high levels of hydrogen sulfide."

Quote: "Most oil and gas fields produce some hydrogen sulphide but the proportion varies widely. Oil fields tend to produce relatively little, while in a gas field the proportion can rise to 40 percent or even 90 percent. Twenty 'vulnerability zones' have been identified in the United States which are especially prone to hydrogen sulphide in underground formations linked with oil and gas."

Note: Lots of interesting information here. Maybe what's most interesting is that hydrogen sulfide levels are apparently rising. The ancient anaerobic bacteria that biogenically generate hydrogen sulfide like warm temps, water and low oxygen levels. With the obvious rise in volcanism around the world, it seems reasonable to think that heat is rising from the core of the Earth to the surface. This will expand the territory of those bacteria, not just in the oceans, seas and lakes, but possibly in underground areas near or below the water table too. Those bacteria also eat methane, which is the primary 'ingredient' in natural gas. So they may be below ground now, growing their numbers as the environment increasingly suits them, resulting in higher H2S concentrations in gas and oil deposits. This may explain all the fracking too - to get that natural gas out of the ground before those ancient anaerobic bacteria use it as food and convert it into deadly and explosively flammable hydrogen sulfide.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-south-scotland-22706237

Quote: "Our engineers carried out checks and have found no problem on our gas network."

Note: Natural gas actually HAS no odor. They add stinky mercaptan to it so that it can be smelled, and mercaptan smells like 'rotten eggs', just as hydrogen sulfide does at low concentrations. So I think many times when people say they smell 'gas', they are confusing the smell of hydrogen sulfide with that of mercaptan. No sign of a gas leak here either, so whatever the smell was, it came through the air, not through gas lines. The fact that a fatality resulted is also a clue that this may have been hydrogen sulfide and not any 'gas leak'. Also see the event below where 'gas' was smelled at the airport in Sacramento and 2 workers sickened - possibly the same scenario there.

  1. frm Manila...Mornin and thanx again 4 all your time and effort! Hope your pooter is put-ting on til the new one comes! Very interesting read at top! have you found WHERE these areas are yet? there must be a map/chart somewhere! That should be VERY!! Interesting to find out!"Twenty 'vulnerability zones' have been identified in the United States which are especially prone to hydrogen sulphide in underground formations linked with oil and gas."

    1. No idea where the 'vulnerability zones' are. I'd like to know too!

  2. Ok - check this out
2nd link is the original link site and I can’t get past the title page….keeps coming up with an error but you can read it at the first link..I just wanted to find a way to make the ‘maps/charts” show up.

Exposure to H2S is one potential health and environmental concern associated with extraction and related operations. H2S is found in Paleozoic carbonates in the Rockies, Mid- Continent, Permian Basin, and Michigan and Illinois Basins (GRI, 1990). Figure n-1 shows the areas of naturally occurring H2S. The Gas Research Institute reported in 1990 that H2S can often occur in association with carbon dioxide (CO2) within the deep portions of a basin and can comprise more than 30 percent of the composition. Among the natural gas deposits in the United States, large deposits in central and north-central Wyoming, in western Texas, in southeastern New Mexico, and in Arkansas were singled out as rich in H2S. The Health Effects Research Laboratory (HERL) also reported that H2S concentrations as high as 42 percent may be present in gas from central. Wyoming. According to the Wyoming State Review (1991), released by the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC), gas reserves in Wyoming were estimated to be approximately 11 trillion cubic feet. The IOGCC also reported that the reserves of liquid hydrocarbons found in western Wyoming are approximately 5 percent H2S. Fifty percent of the oil produced in Wyoming in 1989 was reported to be sour.

is soluble in oil and water. As a result of this solubility, H2S can enter the environment by a variety of pathways. It can enter the atmosphere as a result of releases of gas containing H2S or as a result of venting tanks or vessels which contain or have contained oil or water with significant concentrations of H2S. Waters in the general environment can become contaminated with H2S by contact with either gaseous plumes or waters that contain H2S. The potential sources of H2S emissions associated with oil and gas extraction are summarized in Table n-3. Routine emission sources may include— inefficient air emission control devices - ; — tank venting due to diurnal temperature changes; volatilization; generation by sulfur-reducing bacteria in oil deposits; and migration through poorly plugged wells. Potential accidental release sources include — • equipment failures, e.g., valves, flanges; • piping ruptures due to corrosion, embrittlement, or stress; and • venting due to unanticipated pressure changes."

    1. I couldn't get that document to work past the first page either, maybe a caching issue, (seems to work ok if I google "hydrogen sulfide vulnerability zones" and use that link though) but this pdf has a map showing 14 sour gas H2S-prone areas on page 7:

    2. Great work there, people! I still believe the oceans, lakes and seas are the big threat, but now I see that beneath the ground there is this additional threat too. And when you do the math, it's scary! The government document mentioned 11 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Wyoming deposit, and said that it's probably, overall, 10% hydrogen sulfide. Well hell, that's 1.1 trillion cubic feet of pure hydrogen sulfide, just in the Wyoming deposit! What if heat from below increases pressure and 'sourness' and that stuff starts coming out of the ground, there and elsewhere? How do we know it isn't already?

I may steal that map of the vulnerability areas and reprint it, for people who have problems with PDF files. I'm on the edge of one of those areas myself (the Illinois Basin).

    3. Scary stuff. And isn't part of Yellowstone in Wyoming..?

  3. I have been thinking the same thing about fracking for years. I didn't know about the hydrogen sulfide angle, but I was as certain as I could be that fracking is a controlled release of pressure coming from inside the earth. I wonder, too, about all the "wind farms". Could all those giant windmills really be giant fans, set up to blow hydrogen sulfide and methane away from population centers? Just a thought.

  4. Manila...
Sounds like the fracking which is shattering the 'cover' over all these melting gases may be releasing them in greater concentrations now.... whether they Meant to or Not.

    1. I think the problem is, the 'cover' is going to blow no matter what. Like the methane burp in Santa Monica Bay a coupla months ago. That just happened on its own, as the pressure got too high. So, the choice is probably to wait until it happens on its own - which might just kill everyone in the area - or start sucking the gas out now so that it doesn't all blow at once. The latter means there will be some detrimental effects right now, and that's what they're seeing. The former means the detrimental effects begin a little later, but then the effects may just be flat-out catastrophically fatal to a large area.

That's probably why they aren't telling people. The problem is just that severe. It's not a choice between good and bad, but between really bad and horrifyingly bad.
