Note: These coastal sinkholes make me very uneasy. There are methane hydrate deposits all around the coasts of the world, and they are dissociating in at least some areas now, transforming from a solid (of a sort) to gas and water. As this problem worsens, coastal areas seem likely to experience land subsidence, and in fact that has been happening with some regularity. We may see entire cities wiped out, not necessarily in giant one-day subsidence events (though that can't be ruled out), but over time, event by event...
