Event Update For 2017-06-10

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Quasiparticles imaged, half-light/half-matter could lead to faster circuits, higher bandwidths

    [he' ya go, Jonny]

Exciton-polaritons are a combination of light and matter. Like all quasiparticles, they're created within a solid and have physical properties such as energy and momentum. In this study, they were launched by shining a laser on the sharp tip of a nano-imaging system aimed at a thin flake of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), a layered semiconductor that supports excitons.

Excitons can form when light is absorbed by a semiconductor. When excitons couple strongly with photons, they create exciton-polaritons.

Fei said nanophotonic circuits with their large bandwidth could be up to 1 million times faster than current electrical circuits. [more; that's all I need! it's overloaded NOW Captain! it can't take much more, sirrr, she's goin' ta BLOW!]

  3. That car that burned in Wawne technically shows up as being in Wawne, Hull, e.g. the city that it's in is really Hull. But looking at the map, it was six miles away, so yeah, I wouldn't count that as Hull, even if 'officially' it is. Wawne seems more like a suburb.

Kinda like my house. I'm technically in St. Louis City. But the boundary line actually cuts diagonally through my house, so my address sometimes shows as St. Louis and sometimes Richmond Heights, depending on the database being used. More than 50% of the house is in the city though, so we're officially in the city. Barely! (Unmetered water in the city, so I'm glad - they have metered water across the street, pay by the gallon or whatever. Heh.)

'Coal is dead' and oil faces 'peak demand,' says world's largest investment group
That's good news. But the idea that industrial civilization will run on renewables is incredibly simplistic thinking. Fundamental problems such as how we'll make steel are glossed over as if they don't exist or don't pose a significant challenge. Proponents of renewables need to see that they won't provide energy on the scale and density that fossil fuels do, and that they can't support economic growth. Which means that, even if the transition goes swimmingly well (highly doubtful), humanity is in for a long slide back to a much lower energy level. -- RF
