Event Update For 2015-07-11

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2015-07-11 - Beach explodes in coastal Narragansett (Rhode Island), woman injured:

Quote: "He said there were also some reports that people on the beach smelled some sort of chemical smell, perhaps sulphur or butane."

Quote: "Another beachgoer, Stacey Beal, described a gas odor at the scene."

Quote: "Witnesses described hearing a loud boom noise and seeing the woman get launched from her beach chair into the air. Others reported smelling chemicals, like sulfur, but oddly, there was no smoke or other indications of an explosion."

Note: And the day prior, three fishing boats went up in flames in the wee hours in Narragansett too, mentioned in the 2015-07-10 update. Off the East Coast, a methane clathrate deposit containing 5 trillion pounds of methane is dissociating (melting). Some of that gas will migrate up through the ground and cause explosions and fires. People smelled something too, and that was probably hydrogen sulfide, the sulfur smell or 'gas odor'. The two gases go together because the ancient anaerobic bacteria and archaea that produce hydrogen sulfide eat, among other things, methane. This event is similar to the explosively-formed gas-explosion craters seen in the last year or so on the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia (Russia). This is one of those 'marker events' that we'll be able to look back on later as more coastal areas explode around the world...

2015-07-11 - Kazakhstan sleeping sickness mystery solved: gases from mine the culprit:

Note: They try to implicate carbon monoxide, but they mention 'other gases' too. It couldn't have been carbon monoxide for the same reason that all the carbon monoxide emitted by cars doesn't cause the same problems in every city in the world that uses cars: carbon monoxide is a lighter-than-air gas. That's why carbon monoxide detectors go on ceilings. So once carbon monoxide exits the mine, it'll head up to the ceiling, which in this case is the sky. They mention methane. Methane is also a lighter-than-air gas. They mention 'hydrocarbon'. That's where you find hydrogen sulfide, since it's produced by bacteria and archaea that eat, among other things, methane. Natural gas from the ground contains hydrogen sulfide and so does oil - that's what refineries do: they 'de-sour' gas and oil and take the hydrogen sulfide and other impurities out. And hydrogen sulfide not only could cause all the symptoms this village experienced, but it's a heavier-than-air gas and once it escaped from the mine, it might very well blow over the village and contaminate the water, the ground, the peoples' clothes and buildings, and get breathed in too. So this town of people afflicted by memory-loss, long-duration sleep and hallucinations - that looks like what you see when you have a population that gets hit by low-level hydrogen sulfide over a long period of time. A gas-emitting mine in the area does explain why it was THIS village that was having problems...

  1. Nicely done Jonny. It's so obvious at this point that the authorities ought to be getting a clue about now, don't ya think? i think they know but don't want to panic the public.

    PA all over this report!

Great explanation of the Kazakhstan mystery too Jonny. Makes sense.

  2. Last night there was a funky smell as I was walking to my car after work at 10:20 PM...Am I just being paranoid?! Nothing quite like it in the year I've been here, so I hurried along with baited breath to encase myself in the metal tube with presumably clean air. This is a tourist island so normally there is the delicious waft of a fine meal. -- tap out

  3. The driver lives...I'm curious about the follow up investigation:

  4. Heh, whoops, not wettest day since 1186 in Abilene. Supposed to be 1886! Fixing that now. Our records aren't THAT good!

  5. I know how you feel there - I've smelled some 'rotten egg' odor a few times, late at night, and that 'sweet' smell once besides the time I smelled it near a porta-potty, and I thought the same thing: am I being paranoid?! And I did the same thing you did - held my breath and moved along, got home and laid down near an ozone generator. Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there's NOT deadly gas blowing around here and there!

  6. Oh i'm totally convinced taproot. One of the two times i've ever passed out was walking up to the Atlantic Ocean, up to the boardwalk, began walking along reading a book when suddenly i felt weird. Sat on a bench and keeled over. Some passer by came to my side and roused me - i had no idea why it happened. Jonny's theory makes perfect sense since nothing else medically happened afterward.

  8. more corroboration of MISA theory here Jonny:

Why is the West Antarctic ice sheet melting? It may not be just global warming.

Melting ice in West Antarctica may not be just another product of global warming as previously thought, a recent study suggested.

Instead, new evidence points to a different, more literal kind of global warming: the naturally high temperature of the Earth itself, not just the air and water around it, may be what is causing ice to melt, according to researchers at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

After measuring geothermal heat under the West Antarctic ice sheet for the first time, researchers found it was “significantly higher” than data from around the region had previously indicated. [more]

  9. Mysterious explosion, 'gas odor', memory loss. Yeah...I think I'd be avoiding that beach. Well, any beach, really, but definitely that beach!

  10. Sott and some other sites have been misquoting the report about solar activity and drawing the wrong conclusions according to both Joe Romm of Think Progress and Guy McPherson of NBL.

Guy McPherson Says (in response to RE of Doomstead Diner):
    July 13th, 2015 at 4:00 pm

RE, your ignorance knows no bounds. If you’d done a little research, you’ve have discovered a few tidbits about that cute feedback of yours:

The clathrate gun has been fired. There is no way the proposed mini ice age will significantly slow the heating.

Every report I’ve read about this study misquotes it. Solar *magnetic* activity was evaluated. Media reports are claiming solar *intensity* will decline.

The anticipated 60% reduction in solar magnetic-cycle magnitude translates to a climate forcing of -0.1 W/m2. That’s equivalent to a decrease of 8 ppm atmospheric carbon dioxide. The atmosphere currently holds about 400 ppm CO2, with 350 ppm ultimately lethal to humans. Subtracting 8 ppm at this point is analogous to giving a blood transfusion to a dead man.

Or you could read this. Even Joe Romm figured out this one.

Media Reports The World Will Enter A ‘Mini Ice Age’ In The 2030’s. The Reverse Is True.

  11. Geez, big day for follow-up reporting. Check this out Jonny (and ess jay)

Sheriff: Girl who survived plane crash found by motorist

Officials had identified those aboard as Leland and Sharon Bowman of Marion, Montana, and their 16-year-old step-granddaughter, Autumn Veatch, of Bellingham, Washington.

"We're not going into the status of the grandparents. She was the only one who walked out," Rogers told The Associated Press. "She just said they came out of the clouds, and it crashed."

  12. Heh, you notice I hedged when I reported that 'mini ice age' story - I said SOME scientists say ice age coming. I was thinking exactly what Guy said: how does a little solar magnetic fluctuation counteract the vast amounts of methane entering the system? In other words, I'll believe it when I see it. The only way I could see any kind of ice age coming would be via the rising volcanism. I can't rule that possibility out, but nobody can predict that, especially with all the methane entering the system.

  13. Thanks you two, for your suspicious minds sharpened by experience. I just got home from work tonight and I can report that the unusual smell is now quite faint compared to last night, but so distinctive that I recognized it immediately...not offensive though.

So Jonny did you report that the sweet smell is more concentrated or less than the rotten egg? I remember super concentrated was NO SMELL!

  14. 'Sweet' smell is worse (higher concentration) than 'rotten egg' odor. But like all the safety docs say, you shouldn't count on smelling it at all, because you lose the ability to smell it pretty fast, but it might still be there. Super concentrated is not no smell, it's just that nobody lives to report what it smells like. It might be sweet too, or it might be something else entirely, but dead people tell no tales, so I guess we'll just never know what a lethal concentration smells like.

    1. One last note: I forgot to turn off my headlights THAT night (first time in a decade I think)...but fortunately I have one of those modern cars that shuts them off automatically and noticed it while driving the next day seeing the console dimmed.
