Event Update For 2020-03-07
http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html
The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.
A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Note: Pretty incredible. I first heard about COVID-19 when the general public did, in early January, before it had a name. So in just two months it spread across China then onward into 90-ish other countries and now it's in my metaphorical back yard, 7400 miles from Wuhan...
2020-03-06 - Infectious disease expert expects 30 to 40 percent of the population to be infected with coronavirus within 2 two weeks in Tehran (Iran):

http://robinwestenra.blogspot.com/2020/03/coronavirus-view-from-tehran.html
Note: So that'd be about 3 million people or so. If just 10 percent have serious symptoms requiring hospitalization, that'd be 300,000 beds needed, just in Tehran. That's about as many free beds they would need as the number of free beds in the entirety of the United States. If that's what comes to pass, many of those people will die because the medical system in Tehran will break down and most people won't get the treatment they need to live. We'll have the same problem here once all of our hospital beds are filled...

Note: And then all the infected conservatives returned to their home states to spread the virus around even more!
Quote: "ACU said that the patient did not make contact with President Trump or Vice President Mike Pence, and never attended the events in the main hall."
Note: So? Maybe he or she had contact with someone who DID make contact with Trump or Pence. Six degrees of Kevin Bacon and all that. That's how viruses work...

Gates-Funded Program Will Soon Offer Home-Testing Kits for New Coronavirus
https://www.cryptogon.com/?p=57630
The initiative grew out of the Seattle Flu Study, a 2-year-old research project based at the University of Washington to track the spread of infectious diseases like influenza. Funded with $20 million from Bill Gates’ private office, the project recruited thousands of volunteers and sent them self-test kits. The focus has now shifted entirely to the new coronavirus, using similar methods to aid the public-health response.
When the expanded testing system is up and running, people in the Seattle area who think they might be infected with SARS-CoV-2, the scientific name for the new coronavirus, can fill out a questionnaire online. If their symptoms are consistent, they can request a test kit, which will be delivered to their home within two hours. The swabs will be collected and delivered to the UW lab. [more]

Dementia and Alzheimer's disease traditionally have been considered a concern for older generations. But recent spikes in early onset of these conditions in Americans as young as 30 suggest a different story.
Between 2013 and 2017, early-onset dementia and Alzheimer's diagnoses increased by 83% among commercially insured Americans aged 30 to 44, according to a report released by the health care insurer. That age group includes the oldest millennials.

What are the coronavirus symptoms and when should I see a doctor?
https://www.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-symptoms-when-should-i-see-a-doctor-125627405.html
“The main hallmarks are dry cough, fever, body aches, and malaise…but for some people, especially young, healthy people, it can be very mild,” said B.C. Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry at a recent media briefing. “It’s very hard, particularly early on, to tell the difference between influenza, coronavirus, and other cold symptoms circulating this time of year. Really, that’s why testing has been so important, helping us understand who has this disease and who doesn’t.” [right, it's so important that people have to meet ridiculous CDC criteria before they'll test anyone]
“For most people, the first week can be relatively mild symptoms, although some people get very sick very quickly, particularly older people or people with underlying health conditions.”
The second week is where things can change for people.
“They can become more short of breath, they can have more cough—that’s the virus causing inflammation in the lungs, or pneumonia,” Henry said. “We know that pneumonia is a hallmark of this, but you can only tell pneumonia by a chest X-ray or CT scan.” [more; which costs real money, so poorer infected people won't go]
With the understanding that it's just a rumor that NYC has placed an order for 2 million body bags, the fact is, they might need that many, especially if you include surrounding areas.
ReplyDeleteThe percentage of people experiencing serious or critical symptoms is close to 20%. So let's say that NYC has a population of 8.5 million people and 50% get infected. That's 4.25 million people. A fifth of that is a bit over 800,000 people. Once the hospital beds are filled, which won't take long or involve that many people, most of the other people requiring hospitalization in order to survive will die.
Now double that number to include the surrounding areas, and you could be at 1.6 million people dead in NYC and surrounding areas. Those estimates could be low, so tack on a few extras, because it's better to have too many body bags than too few, and 2 million actually seems like a pretty reasonable purchase amount.
i agree Jonny. The nation, though, may need a LOT more than 2 million before it's all over.
ReplyDeleteOut Of Time: U.S. Cases Explode As The Coronavirus Pandemic Reaches A Tipping Point
http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/out-of-time-u-s-cases-explode-as-the-coronavirus-pandemic-reaches-a-tipping-point
If you thought that we had more time before this coronavirus pandemic exploded out of control in the United States, I am sorry to say that you are out of luck. In all of the major nations in the western world, the number of confirmed cases escalated dramatically over the past few days. Here in the U.S., COVID-19 has now reached 33 states, and the number of confirmed cases seems to literally be changing every few minutes as more announcements are made. Over the weekend, we witnessed another wild round of panic buying as people feverishly stocked up for an extended pandemic, but at least Americans are not throwing punches at each other over toilet paper like we are witnessing elsewhere in the world. Needless to say, all of this insanity is badly rattling Wall Street. The markets are going absolutely nuts, and it looks like this could be a truly historic week. Much more importantly, it looks like any hope of containing this virus is now completely dead. In fact, Dr. Scott Gottlieb of the Food and Drug Administration just told the entire nation that we are “past the point of containment” now.
Cuomo also shocked many members of the media when he absolutely lambasted the CDC. The guidelines that the CDC imposed upon the states greatly suppressed the amount of testing up to this point, and Cuomo seems to be among those that believe that this was a huge mistake… [more]

Ice Age On Ice: Northern Hemisphere has probably witnessed its warmest winter ever: Advanced the arrival of spring: Hedgehogs and other animals have not hibernated this winter, UK
ReplyDeletehttp://www.thebigwobble.org/2020/03/ice-age-on-ice-northern-hemisphere-has.html
Disturbing patterns show the Northern Hemisphere has witnessed its warmest winter ever, as the U.S. UK and Ireland, Europe and Russia all reported warm or record warmth for winter 2019/20. Across much of the United States, a warming climate has advanced the arrival of spring. Christmas was so mild in Moscow last year they had to import thousands of tons of snow to cover the streets of the capitol.
Winter was the 6th warmest on record for the U.S. February was wetter and warmer than average Winter? For some regions of the country, it was as if it never happened at all. In fact, the period from December through February was much warmer than normal across the contiguous United States, while precipitation remained above-average, according to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information. February continued the balmy trend, with unusually warm and wet conditions across the Lower 48 states last month. Not so for Alaska: The state shivered under its coldest February in more than 20 years. [more]

Trump E.P.A. updates plan to limit science used in environmental rules – “They’re putting in nonscientific criteria to decide what science the agency can use”

[Shit for brains]Andrew R. Wheeler, Trump’s administrator of the E.P.A. [Environmental Pollution Agency], continued his mission of dismantling environmental regulation in the U.S. by formally revising a proposal that would significantly restrict the type of research that can be used to draft environmental and public health regulations. Experts say the measure, made public on 3 March 2020, amounts to one of the Trump’s most far-reaching assaults on science.

The survivors told a local newspaper that, after overflowing, a stream switched its usual track into the shallow two-end cavity sweeping away the five.
Earlier this week, Olivier Kayumba, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Disaster Management cautioned people to remain vigilant during this rainy.
Kayumba [as opposed to Kumbaya!] said 53 people were killed and 84 others injured in different parts of Rwanda due to disasters triggered by heavy rains since January this year, Ministry of Emergency Management said on Friday.
He said that 858 houses, 196 hectares of crops, 23 roads, 17 bridges and eight churches, among others, were destroyed.
The update cited lightning, floods and rainstorms as the major causes of deaths. [more; wonder what they prayed for?]

ReplyDeleteTrump Melts Down as the Coronavirus Sends the Stock Market Plunging
https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/trump-melts-down-coronavirus-sends-170002610.html
[the man is clearly delusional]
On Monday morning, the stock market plunged dramatically, presaging potentially the biggest economic shock since the financial crisis of 2008. As soon as markets opened in the U.S., the S&P 500 dropped 7 percent. The drop was so extreme that it triggered a safety mechanism, halting all trading for 15 minutes. Once trading resumed, the market recovered, slightly, but was still down by 6 percent. Trading will automatically pause again if the drop reaches 13 percent, and then again at 20.
The immediate cause was the start of a price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, with each country trying to undercut the other's oil prices over the weekend. With demand suppressed by coronavirus, the price of oil dropped by 25 percent, the biggest fall since the early 1990s, and that shook markets around the world. Even the price of Bitcoin dropped by 10 percent and cumulatively all cryptocurrency lost $26 billion in value.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has spent the past two days at Mar-a-Lago, the resort he owns in Florida, where he reportedly golfed with players from the Washington Nationals. Now, he's apparently incensed that the outbreak is undermining his main selling point for his presidency (other than white resentment): a strong economy.
In a half dozen tweets, he tried to argue against the stock market, pointing out that a drop in oil prices is good for consumers. He also blamed the media for reporting on the coronavirus outbreak at all, claiming that reporters are only covering it in an attempt to hurt him, pointing out that more people died last year from the flu, and yet, "Nothing is shut down, life & the economy go on. At this moment there are 546 confirmed cases of CoronaVirus, with 22 deaths. Think about that!"
This is misleading. Currently, the U.S. does not have widespread testing for coronavirus, so it's unclear how many cases there actually are in the country. [more; no, YOU think about it!]
Coronavirus is forcing employers to confront inequalities in their own ranks
https://qz.com/work/1814367/coronavirus-prompts-employers-to-confront-inequalities-in-their-own-ranks
In response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, big employers have been quick to take preventative measures—for instance, restricting travel, canceling large gatherings, and instructing employees to work from home. Many of those workers are in food preparation, office cleaning, security, driving services, and retail sales, which are often low-wage jobs without benefits like paid leave or an ability to work from home. ReplyDeleteCoronavirus generally 'causes symptoms within five days'
https://www.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-covid19-symptoms-five-days-210041231.html
The coronavirus tends to take five days to cause symptoms, research suggests.
Results show most developed the tell-tale flu-like symptoms within five days, while nearly all (97.5%) endured fever, cough and breathlessness within 11.5 days.
[i got lucky and only caught a cold last week, with a wheezy upper respiratory cough. On the mend now. No fever, aches, malaise or any of the other signs.]

Malnourished bugs: Higher CO2 levels make plants less nutritious, hurting insect populations
https://www.yahoo.com/news/malnourished-bugs-higher-co2-levels-190208037.html
Grasshopper populations, like those of many other insects, are declining. My colleagues and I identified a new possible culprit: The plants grasshoppers rely on for food are becoming less nutritious due to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the air.
Other factors, like pesticide use and habitat destruction, are certainly hurting insect populations in many places. But since CO2 is increasing globally, my colleagues and I suspect that nutrient dilution is likely bad news for plant-eating insects across a huge variety of habitats, in both pristine and degraded ecosystems. And since insects are crucial parts of all terrestrial food webs, their loss affects many other organisms from plants to birds.[more; to us]
