Quote: "There are dozens of climate models, and for decades they’ve agreed on what it would take to heat the planet by about 3° Celsius. It’s an outcome that would be disastrous—flooded cities, agricultural failures, deadly heat—but there’s been a grim steadiness in the consensus among these complicated climate simulations. Then last year, unnoticed in plain view, some of the models started running very hot. The scientists who hone these systems used the same assumptions about greenhouse-gas emissions as before and came back with far worse outcomes. Some produced projections in excess of 5°C, a nightmare scenario."

Quote: "Scientists have long known that higher air temperatures are contributing to the surface melting on Greenland's ice sheet. But a new study has found another threat that has begun attacking the ice from below: Warm ocean water moving underneath the vast glaciers is causing them to melt even more quickly."
Quote: "Much of the Arctic experienced record temperatures last summer, which caused Greenland's ice sheet to lose 11 billion tons of surface ice to the ocean in just one day, scientists said. That is the equivalent of 4.4 million Olympic swimming pools."
Quote: "Mass loss from Greenland's ice sheet is currently the single largest driver of sea level rise globally, and according to a study published in December in the journal Nature, Greenland's ice sheet is currently melting seven times faster than it was in 1992. This ice sheet holds enough water to raise global sea levels by more than 24 feet."

2020-02-05 - Tencent may have accidentally leaked real data on coronavirus deaths:
http://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3871594
http://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10904402/coronavirus-chinese-media-giant-lists-deaths-as-24589/
http://www.thebigwobble.org/2020/02/coronavirus-day-38-feb-6th-accidentally.html
Quote: "On late Saturday evening (Feb. 1), the Tencent webpage showed confirmed cases of the Wuhan virus in China as standing at 154,023, 10 times the official figure at the time. It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure. The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300. Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day."
Quote: "There have also been reports from crematorium workers in Wuhan - the epicentre of the virus - that they are being sent corpses not added to the official tally. Meanwhile hospital staff have leaked videos purporting to show dead bodies across ward corridors in Wuhan."
Quote: "According to Mr. Yun, his facility needs 'at least 100 body bags' every single day. If every other cremation center in the city is handling a similar workload, that would strongly indicate that the true death toll is far, far larger than the official numbers we are being given."
Note: 24,589 deaths out of 154,023 confirmed cases is a 15.96% death rate, far higher than the highest estimate (10%) for the deadly 1918 Spanish flu. Even if you count the suspected cases, the death rate is still 10.5%. And if that ONE crematorium in that ONE city is burning 100 corpses per day then the 'official figures' can't possibly be correct. If those higher numbers are the real stats then it is no wonder that they're hiding reality with a second sanitized less panic-evoking set of stats. If those higher numbers are correct then what they're hiding is the fact that this is a veritable doomsday virus. That would spook the herd. Better a dead herd than a spooked herd!

Quote: "Climate change, extreme weather events from hurricanes to heatwaves, the decline of life-sustaining ecosystems, food security and dwindling stores of fresh water – each poses a monumental challenge to humanity in the 21st century. Out of 30 global-scale risks, these five topped the list both in terms of likelihood and impact, according to scientists surveyed by Future Earth, an international research organisation. In combination, they 'have the potential to impact and amplify one another in ways that might cascade to create global systemic collapse,' a team led by Maria Ivanova, a professor at the Center for Governance and Sustainability at the University of Massachusetts, said in a 50-page report."

http://www.fasterthanexpected.com/2020/02/05/why-clouds-are-the-key-to-new-troubling-projections-on-warming/
Quote: "Marine stratus and stratocumulus clouds predominantly cool the Earth. They shade roughly a fifth of the oceans, reflecting 30 to 60 percent of the solar radiation that hits them back into space. In this way, they are reckoned to cut the amount of energy reaching the Earth’s surface by between 4 and 7 percent. But it seems increasingly likely that they could become thinner or burn off entirely in a warmer world, leaving more clear skies through which the sun may add a degree Celsius or more to global warming."

Quote: "Flying over southern New Brunswick in a helicopter, it doesn't take long to spot moose running through the snow in the forest beneath. What isn't visible from the air are the thousands of ticks invading their bodies. In nearby New Hampshire and Maine, over a three-year period, scientists found an alarming 70 per cent of calves didn't make it through their first winter due in large part to tick infestation, according to a study in the Canadian Journal of Zoology. In some cases, up to 80,000 ticks were found on a single moose."
Quote: "When the scientists pulled open her fur, they revealed dozens of ticks attached to a tiny patch of the animal's skin, literally sucking the life out of it. They estimated there were many thousands on her entire body."
Note: Self-cloning super-ticks are spreading in the US too, sucking cows dry of blood and sparking fears humans may be next, mentioned in the 2019-07-12 update...

2020-02-11 - Previous Antarctic melting preceded by rising atmospheric methane and warming ocean temperatures, both of which are happening now:
http://www.devdiscourse.com/article/science-environment/871126-melting-of-antarctic-ice-sheet-under-2c-warming
Quote: "Deuterium isotope measurements revealed a hiatus in the ice record beginning approximately 130,000 years ago, immediately prior to the LIG. This hiatus suggests a substantial loss of ice mass during the LIG that coincides with a well-documented peak in ocean temperatures, suggesting that ocean warming drove ice sheet loss. The DNA analysis of ancient microbes preserved in the ice revealed a high proportion of methane-utilizing bacteria immediately prior to the ice sheet loss, consistent with elevated methane levels due to methane release from marine sediments."

Quote: "The cruise ship had been shunned at port after port for fear it might carry the coronavirus, but when the Westerdam arrived in Cambodia on Thursday, the prime minister greeted its passengers with flowers. Amid assurances that the ship was disease free, hundreds of elated passengers disembarked. Some went sightseeing, visiting beaches and restaurants and getting massages. Others traveled on to destinations around the world. One, however, did not make it much farther than the thermal scanners at the Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia. The passenger, an American, was stopped on Saturday, and later tested positive for the coronavirus."
Quote: "With more than a thousand passengers from the Westerdam headed for home, Dr. Schaffner said, it may be harder than ever to keep the coronavirus outbreak contained to China. 'This could be a turning point,' he said."
Note: There've already been cases where a person was infected who had no contact with anyone who'd been to China, and it turned out they got it from a family member, and THEY hadn't had any contact with anyone who'd been to China either, and nobody knows who they got it from. In other words, it's already out in the wild here and there, spreading quietly and out of control from person to person. That means it's not likely to be very long before this virus is everywhere. And then comes the unknown - what happens when it IS everywhere? People dropping dead on streets all over the place? Martial law and soldiers on the streets wearing gas masks with orders to shoot anyone who leaves their homes? Economic collapse? Runs on grocery stores and hardware stores? All of the above? I'm not gonna tell you to stock up on enough provisions to last a couple of months if things should get that grim. I'm also not gonna tell you NOT to do that, because things might just get that grim. I'll just say that it's an idea that's worth considering and if you ARE going to do that, if you wait until the runs begin then you'll have waited too long...

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-15/china-quarantines-cash-to-sanitize-old-bank-notes-from-virus
Quote: "China’s central bank says it plans to destroy most of the banknotes collected by hospitals, markets, and buses in some regions hard hit by the new coronavirus. Fan Yifei, deputy governor of the Chinese central bank, said they plan to out pump 600 billion yuan ($85.6 billion) of freshly printed paper currency to replace the bills taken out of circulation."
Quote: "In other areas of the country, the government has ordered banks to remove incoming paper currency from circulation and replace it with the new cash. They have been directed to keep the cash under quarantine for 14 days and disinfect it at high temperatures and with ultraviolet light before returning it to the public."
Note: So they're destroying a lot of money and the rest will have to be quarantined and sterilized for 14 days. This is another one of those examples where it's best to pay attention to what they do, not what they say. I've never heard of any government destroying vast amounts of cash because of an outbreak before, not for pneumonic plague outbreaks, not for the Spanish Flu of 1918, not for SARS, not for MERS, not for anything. I'm not saying it's a bad idea and that they shouldn't do it. I'm saying that the actions they are taking are the kind of unprecedented actions you might expect to see a nation take to combat a veritable doomsday virus, not some virus no more dangerous than the flu...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSd9hM0uK4M
Quote: "In an exclusive clip of Sunday’s episode, judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie are forced to pause auditions due to a gas leak that could be potentially be dangerous. 'Do you guys smell gas? It’s pretty intense,' Perry, 35, says in the clip. 'We’re getting heavy propane,' Bryan, 43, says to the Idol producers."
Quote: "There is a scramble to evacuate and once outside, Perry appears to be overcome. 'I'm not feeling good,' the singer says as she falls to the ground."
Note: I didn't see in any of the stories any confirmation that there was actually a gas leak, just some guy on the set saying it smelled like propane and then everyone ran with the 'gas leak' theory. Propane is odorless, so nobody ever smells propane. What they smell is an odorant that's added to propane to make it smell like rotten eggs. It may be the first case of community spread in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday."
Note: So whoever they got it from is still out in society passing it on to others, and has been for a while. And whoever else that person infected, they've been out in society passing it on to others too, who have passed it on to yet others. Any of those people may have been visitors from other cities who have returned home, gone to restaurants or grocery stores or music concerts and such. In other words, it's here now, spreading quietly from person to person, and anyone you meet from now on could be infectious. Maybe 'the authorities' know it's already widespread and the reason they're not testing very many people is to force the number of confirmed cases to remain a low number. You can't have more than 500 confirmed cases if you only test 500 people!

Prepare for this to explode across the country anytime now. If the 'R naught' of this virus is 6, and there are some indications that it could be that high, then after a month there'd be around 1300 infected people in the US. I suspect that's about where we're at now. Doesn't sound all THAT bad, right? Well, if that's where we're at then with a one-week cycle and an 'R naught' of 6, everyone in the US will be infected by the end of April. Obviously that's not going to happen - many people will be implementing a successful 'social distancing' regime. But the situation could at least be very dire by the end of April...
