The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.
A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

http://www.somerset-kentucky.com/news/somerset-s-mystery-stench-remains-unsolved/article_c2a5a7e4-6859-11e8-bc69-abe7f019ffd0.html
Quote: "Residents of the downtown Somerset area reported a noxious odor permeating the air, something akin to sewer smells. The olfactory offensiveness, based on comments shared on Facebook by residents, was particularly problematic in the area around South Central Avenue and Cotter Avenue. However, late Saturday evening, it could be smelled even around the Fountain Square and along East Mt. Vernon Street. Dana Whitis, water and wastewater director for the City of Somerset, was paged out to check on the problem after receiving a call from a concerned citizen in the above area. 'I was out walking around downtown from about 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.,' she said. '(The smell) was awful.'"

Forest Service preps for another summer of devastating wildfires across much of the country

The Forest Service and its partners have more than 10,000 firefighters, 900 engines and hundreds of aircraft available to manage the fires, Christiansen told senators. [and it won't be enough]
The Interior Department also plans to deploy more than 4,000 firefighters this year and will have access to 89 air tankers and other equipment to battle forest fires, said Jeffery Rupert, director of the Office of Wildland Fire.
A wildfire package included in a massive spending bill that Congress passed in March also will be key to helping the Forest Service fight this year’s fires, Christiansen said.
The bill created a wildfire disaster fund to help fight increasingly severe fires and set aside more than $20 billion over 10 years to enable the Forest Service and other federal agencies to stop borrowing from non-fire-related accounts to pay for wildfire costs. [more]

Philly Middle-School Students Given 'Bulletproof Backpack' As Graduation Gift
Here's an interesting observation (to me). Ever since moving in here over 10 years ago, the mailbox by the street on the standard 4x4 post indicated that it was rotting out - the mailbox leaned a bit to one side and toward the street. Today, i'm finally getting around to replacing the post. The question, of course is WHY (knowing we don't have long, why bother)? My answer - for something to do. Same holds for the 4 porch posts by the front door - they show rot problems at the bottom. i'll probably look into that job in the fall, should we live that long. Cleaning up the yard and mowing the grass (stupidest job ever) goes on, despite our approaching extinction. Let's tidy up so that the marauding zombie hordes won't have to put up with squalor, and, should anyone survive in my area, they'll have a house with fresh porch posts and a stable mailbox!

MIT creates 'psychopath' AI named Norman
https://www.sott.net/article/387395-MIT-creates-psychopath-AI-named-Norman
Between Boston Dynamics' headless, door-opening cyborg dogs, Omron Automation's empathy chips for robots, and MIT Media Lab's new 'psychopath' AI Norman (named for Norman Bates, the murderer from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho), it looks like we've got everything we need to cobble together a darker, more violent version of I, Robot, or at least another episode of Black Mirror Season 5.
Seriously, listen to this: A team of MIT employees took a normal image-captioning AI (designed to look at pictures and provide a written description of what it sees) and fed it a steady stream of images from an unnamed Reddit board where people exclusively post horrifying, morbid images of murder and death.
Afterward, the team showed this AI (now dubbed Norman) a series of Rorschach inkblots, which are used by psychiatrists and psychoanalysts to judge a patient's mental state.
The team then compared Norman's captions to a normal AI that had not been traumatized with images of death and found a disturbing pattern.
For example, Norman captioned one inkblot "man is murdered by machine gun in broad daylight", while the other AI captioned the same image, "a black and white photo of a baseball glove." [more]

Corruption allegations against EPA’s Pruitt reach farcical level

Pruitt Aide Resigns Amid Scandals
ReplyDeletehttps://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/pruitt-aide-resigns-amid-scandals/ar-AAyj2tz
A top aide to Scott Pruitt, Millan Hupp, resigned from the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a source briefed on the matter and documents reviewed by The Atlantic. Her last day will be Friday.
Hupp, who worked as the director of scheduling and advance, has been entangled in many of the scandals dogging EPA Administrator Pruitt. In March, she was one of two aides who received hefty salary bumps, even after the White House refused Pruitt’s request for raises. And as The Washington Post reported on Monday, she recently testified to the House Oversight Committee that she regularly spent her days doing personal tasks for Pruitt, from hunting for housing to calling the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., to inquire about purchasing a used mattress.
According to one top EPA official, the 26-year-old was “tired of being thrown under the bus by Pruitt,” and weary of seeing her name constantly appear in headlines about the agency. Officials began drafting her resignation paperwork on Monday morning, just after portions of her congressional testimony were made public.

Maren sang, “We represent the Lollipop Guild/And we welcome you to Munchkinland,” and presented a oversized lollipop to Dorothy (Judy Garland). He was paid $50 a week; the dog that played Toto, meanwhile, got $125. [more]

Workers poked metal rods into the terrain to release smoke, an indication that super-hot temperatures remained below the surface three days after the volcanic explosion that killed at least 75 people.
Once a verdant collection of canyons, hillsides and farms, the area was reduced to a moonscape of ash by the avalanche of fast-moving molten rock, mud, and debris. After a drone survey, police managed to reach a farm where a home had been buried and people were believed to have been trapped inside.
At least 192 people are missing, and the death toll was sure to rise. [more]

Party Like It's 1929
ReplyDeletehttp://ponziworld.blogspot.com/2018/06/party-like-its-1929.html
The mega bubble stocks of this era - Amazon, Netflix, Tesla, all have one thing in common: They never make any real profit. They don't have to - they are perma-bid merely based upon the hype and future-casting of their beloved corporate leaders. Sound familiar? They are emblematic of the Trump bubble. Trump took over a flagging late cycle economy and used his hyperbolic bullshit (and 5% of GDP in fiscal profligacy) to drive one-time manic over-investment, giving the delusion of indefinite GDP growth. What he created in reality is the exact 1929 scenario - a business-friendly president cutting taxes at the end of a decade-long expansion and deregulating industry, thereby driving an over-heated economy, over-speculation, monetary tightening and a waterfall crash...
Ironically, the sectors that Trump has "helped" the most via deregulation are performing the worst

The nation's coasts broke records for tidal flooding over the past year as storms combined with rising seas to inundate downtown areas of Miami, Boston and other major cities, according to a federal report released Wednesday.
While Miami currently experiences only a few days of tidal flooding per year, for example, it could see inundation every other day by 2060 under an intermediate scenario for rising seas. The report said that some cities that are dry today could have daily flooding by the end of the century. [more]
