Event Update For 2017-08-19

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2017-08-19 - Unknown gas sickens people at apartment building in Trenton (New Jersey), 740 feet from the Delaware River:

Quote: "One of the first residents at a city apartment building to smell the potent odor had a bad reaction. 'It hit me in the back of my throat,' the 660 Centre Street apartment resident said Saturday morning. 'I started coughing, crying and sneezing and stuff. I couldn’t get it out.' Several other residents had the same reaction to the nauseating gas at the apartment building and first responders were called to the scene at approximately 10 a.m."

Note: Move along, nothing to see here, probably just some poison gas which may or may not cause permanent health problems for these people. Here's a Google Maps link of the area...

2017-08-19 - Large wildfire rages for at least two weeks in Greenland:

Quote: "There's something curious happening in icy Greenland: a wildfire that has been burning for weeks. The wildfire appears to be historic in both its size and its duration, but no one can say for sure — because Greenland doesn't have longstanding records of fires. Officials haven't had much of a need for them, seeing as nearly 80 percent of the Arctic island is covered in an ice sheet."

Quote: "Although the current fire’s cause remains a mystery, peat from thawed permafrost could be its fuel, said Jessica McCarty, a geographer at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, who specializes in geospatial analysis of wildfires."

Quote: "If the fire is being fueled by thawed permafrost, there may be underlying climate change implications, McCarty continued. 'The climate change [connection] is that there would be no fires here in Greenland if there were no fuel, and the only way that there’s fuel is if the permafrost is [thawed]. Personally, this is very disturbing to me,' McCarty said, because the fire indicates significant permafrost degradation 'sooner than [scientists] thought it would happen.' Researchers project significant permafrost loss in Greenland by the end of the century. Not 2017, she said."

Note: So from the end of the century Siberia's been seeing horrendous fires starting a few years before those giant methane bulges began exploding and burning and leaving gigantic craters - same thing there. The permafrost is melting. It's begun in Canada and Alaska too, so I'd expect some of those exploding methane craters to start appearing in Alaska, Canada and Greenland anytime now...

2017-08-19 - Cargo ship 'Cheshire' continues burning out of control with load of 42,000 tons of explosives near the Canary Islands:

Quote: "Fire is absolutely out of control and growing, and it looks like nothing can be done even to try to take it under control, because of toxic fumes billowing from cargo hold, and because of danger of possible major explosion, considering the character of the cargo, ammonium nitrate, and its quantity. CHESHIRE in fact, is a floating bomb, loaded with more than 42,000 tons of explosives."

Quote: "Maybe officials, along with salvage team and experts, just don’t know how to handle it all, what’s the chance of an explosion of all cargo or part of it, and what does explosion of more than 40,000 tons of ammonium nitrate looks like, what are the equivalents?"

Note: First mentioned this ship fire in the 2017-08-15 update. At the time they mentioned that the owner wanted to salvage the ship and I was thinking that that sounded mighty risky, considering the cargo. Who'd want to come within five miles of a burning ship carrying 42,000 tons of explosives? That's 42 kilotons, or twice the explosive potential of 'Fat Man', the atomic bomb that destroyed Nagasaki...

  1. Thanks for the nifty eclipse time calculator. I may be at WCU around 2 pm, where they have a big thing going at the campus library (for the partial one that we'll see). There's an observatory on campus, but I doubt it will be open to the public. You are in one of the ideal locations, Jonny. Hope you get to see the real deal.

Trains can't seem to stay on tracks lately.

More noxious gases wafting around every day now.

What should frighten everyone reading your blog, Jonny, beside the gases blowing around (and all the other stuff), is the fact that even not-forecasted small storms can turn into life-threatening situations due to winds, hail and lightning now.

  6. Woohoo, saw the eclipse! I made us some his-and-hers eclipse boxes and we sat in the front yard and watched. Right when the Sun was completely eclipsed, I took one quick look at the Sun, a fraction of a second, with just one eye and saw the black circle with fire around it. One thing I didn't expect but which was very noticeable: about 3 minutes before the full eclipse, as the light was getting noticeably dimmer, all the crickets in the neighborhood started making their evening noise, which was odd to hear at 1:18 PM.

  7. Yeah, the temperature dropped a good 5 - 7 degrees around here while it was happening - the light made it seem like about 6:30 when it wasn't even 3 pm. I viewed it through the NASA approved glasses, but I wasn't at the university library, I was at a farm stand out of town picking up corn, peaches and a watermelon. The kids working there all had the glasses and were taking turns checking it out and lending them to whoever wanted to see it. Ours was only ~ 80% covered but it was noticeable.

That sinking feeling - US warships

It doesn't inspire confidence that the US Navy manages to crash another of its top-notch warships - on the same day that it launches military drills off Korea; drills which could spark an accidental nuclear war.

In the latest incident, the guided-missile destroyer USS John S McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore. This was the fourth major accident involving the US Navy this year - and all were in Asia-Pacific. Ten American sailors are missing and, from the extensive damage to the ship, presumed dead.

"How does a state-of-the-art navy destroyer equipped with multiple radar systems and communications gear with a full-bridge watch not see, detect and evade a 30,000 ton slow-moving (10 knots) behemoth?" [more]

Trump to announce four more one-year wars in Afghanistan

This evening Trump will announce a new "path forward" in the occupation of Afghanistan. According to the usual leaks it will be very same path the U.S. has taken for 16 years.

Trump will announce that 1,000 or so troops will be added to the current contingent. About 15,000 foreign troops will be in Afghanistan. About three contractors per each soldier will be additionally deployed.

Trump knows that this "path forward" is nonsense that leads nowhere, that the best option for all foreign troops in Afghanistan is to simply leave

But neither the military nor the CIA nor the local Afghan government will let the U.S. leave. [more]
