2015 - OCT - Other Stories

2015-10-01 - Underwater volcano spewing methane off the coast of Southeast Alaska:

Quote: "He and a Canadian counterpart found the volcano Sept. 23 during a study of the Queen Charlotte-Fairweather Fault System. That’s been the epicenter of some recent earthquakes. 'We had just completed some survey work and we modified our line to go to another place to look. And as we were transiting, we came across this big plume and this big cone where the plume was coming out of,' he said. The plume, made up of methane gas, was being released by a volcanic vent about 3,000 feet below. It stretched up about two-thirds of the way to the ocean’s surface."

Note: Hydrogen sulfide is the best superconductor known to man. It looks like it's causing lightning strike problems. It's not going to turn the atmosphere into a superconductor, but it doesn't seem implausible that it is affecting atmospheric conductivity, resulting in more lightning strike fatalities...

2015-10-04 - President Obama declares state of emergency over flooding in South Carolina, National Guard deployed:

Quote: "The total 24-plus inches of rain in Boone Hall and 18-plus inches near Kiawah are 'mind-boggling,' the National Weather Service in South Carolina tweeted Sunday afternoon.  Charleston set a new daily record on Saturday when it experienced 11.5 inches of rain, the NWS reported. 'To put this in perspective, 11.50 inches is 22.5 percent of the annual normal rainfall for the City of Charleston,' the NWS wrote in an update."

2015-10-05 - Five East Coast states declare state of emergency over horrific flooding:

2015-10-04 - Flooding kills 13+ people in the Alpes-Maritimes region (France):

Quote: "Victims were found dead in a retirement home, campsites, and cars submerged in a tunnel. Residents, stunned by the ferocity of the brief downpour Saturday night, described it as the worst flooding they'd ever seen — so dramatic that President Francois Hollande paid an emergency visit Sunday to promise government aid for victims."

Note: Methane reacts with ozone and hydroxyl radicals and turns into water vapor. So all of the methane gushing into the atmosphere in the Northern Hemisphere is eroding the oxidizing capability of the atmosphere (which is why the Sun looks so blinding white now), which allows more UV to hit the planet, and which creates more moisture in the air, which results in more high-precip events. This problem - like all of the other problems - is going to get much worse...

2015-10-05 - Creature born with the body of a buffalo and the head of crocodile in Thailand:

Quote: "The strange animal appears to have the scaly, rough head and skin of a reptile such as a crocodile. However, on closer inspection, it's also got the body, limbs and hooves of a mammal such as a calf."

Note: Crocalo? Buffodile? Possibly a genetic chimera, a blend of two species. That's what's missing from current evolutionary theory - horizontal gene transfer. That explains why we have pig DNA, which is what gives us our fatty skin layer (unlike any other primates), as well as our relative hairlessness and our more 'snout-like' noses. Without that fatty layer we would have been stuck in warm climates too, so that was important for us to be able to spread across the world.

Some primates long ago had the same thing happen to them as happened with this thing's buffalo parents, and one of those primates gave birth to some 'hairless apes' with pig DNA, pig-primate chimeras, and that was us. This also explains why nobody's ever found a 'missing link' - there isn't one. Primates to humans in one step, one generation, via horizontal gene transfer, just like we do in labs, but Mother Nature can do it too, rarely, randomly, in the wild. We'll see more of this as the UV levels climb and DNA/RNA sustains damage in creatures all around the world. This is one of Mother Nature's ways of preserving evolutionary gains and complexity. Even if the human race goes extinct, our DNA/RNA may find its way into some new chimeras which may survive, rodent-human chimeras or lizard-human chimeras or whatnot...

2015-10-06 - Sea levels rising rapidly in the last year:

Quote: "Rates of land ice melt continued to increase — providing a greater and greater fraction of overall global sea level rise. And global ocean currents showed signs of a melt-spurred change — which resulted in an uneven distribution of this overall rise. During that less than one year time, seas rose by fully 1 centimeter. That’s three times the ‘normal’ rate that’s been roughly ongoing since the early 1990s. A big bump that’s now part of a three-and-a-half-year, 3-centimeter surge. One more sign that global sea level rise is starting to really ramp up."

Note: That's happening concurrent with the rising methane levels in the atmosphere. No coincidence there...

Each year around 300 Bewick's swans migrate 2,500 miles from Arctic Russia to escape the approaching cold weather which follows closely behind them. They flock to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve at Slimbridge, Glos, where their arrival has been recorded since 1963. The first bird arrived on Sunday - a full 25 days earlier than last year and the earliest date on record."

Note: Gulf stream stalling? If so then the effects will be seen fairly quickly in Europe, and people used to temperate climes but at Siberian latitudes might want to get prepared for a more Siberia-like climate...

2015-10-14 - Methane found pluming from the ocean floor off the coast of Oregon and Washington:

Quote: "Warming ocean temperatures a third of a mile below the surface, in a dark ocean in areas with little marine life, might attract scant attention. But this is precisely the depth where frozen pockets of methane 'ice' transition from a dormant solid to a powerful greenhouse gas. New University of Washington research suggests that subsurface warming could be causing more methane gas to bubble up off the Washington and Oregon coast. The study, to appear in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, shows that of 168 bubble plumes observed within the past decade, a disproportionate number were seen at a critical depth for the stability of methane hydrates."

Quote: "According to a report from the Daily Mail, a recent study has revealed that an alarming series of methane plumes are popping up from vents on the sea floor off the coast of Washington and Oregon. Researchers think warming water temperatures roughly a third of a mile below the surface is responsible for the release of the gas."

Quote: "Besides the West Coast, research last year found a huge increase in methane plumes off the East Coast."

Note: 'Subsurface warming' - that's heat from BELOW. At least two volcanoes have erupted off the coast of Oregon too, another sign of heat rising from below. And now we have methane clathrate deposits destabilizing and dissociating off both the East Coast AND the West Coast, to go along with the methane spewing from the ocean floor in the Artic, the methane exploding out of the ground in Siberia as the ancient permafrost melts away, the clathrates dissociating off the coast of New Zealand, the methane that belched from a pond in Canada, people's tapwater being found to be flammable and contaminated with methane in Texas, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and so on.

As the methane blows off the ocean onto land, some of it will adsorb onto matter, causing fires to be much worse than they normally are. In fact, all of the West Coast states had horrific fires this wildfire season, including Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California, and this wildfire season was the worst in US history. Expect things to get worse from here on out. Eventually, if the West Coast clathrates really get gushing, the methane may self-ignite as it exits the ocean, turning the ocean into a gigantic flamethrower which spits fire and explosions downwind, which for the Pacific Ocean is generally toward the land...

This radio-laser system can be installed on nuclear powered boats such as the 40 Russian Arctic ice breakers and start immediate work on destroying the atmospheric methane clouds that are building up in the Arctic."

Note: Sounds good to me! Hydroxyl radicals would react away both methane AND hydrogen sulfide too. This is no real solution though, unfortunately, because even if it works, it will only work on the gases in the atmosphere, which means the oceans and seas will still be thoroughly contaminated and turned into giant poison-spewing factories, and that will eventually wipe out oxygen-using life on Earth, just as has happened before in Earth's past. On the other hand, this could buy us some time, which is obviously better than NOT buying us some time...

2015-10-29 - NASA finds upper atmosphere CO2 levels rising faster than expected in the northern hemisphere:

Quote: "NASA has analyzed 14 years worth of data collected by its Thermosphere, Inonosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, revealing a surprisingly fast increase in carbon dioxide levels in the upper atmosphere. The stats also reveal that the gas is more localized to the Northern Hemisphere than predicted by climate models."

Note: Vast amounts of methane are belching into the atmosphere now, especially in the northern hemisphere. Methane is a lighter-than-air gas so it tends to accumulate in the upper atmosphere where it reacts with hydroxyl radicals and the ozone layer and forms water and CO2, so one would expect to see CO2 levels rising, especially in the northern hemisphere, along with increasing numbers of high-precip events causing major flooding around the world...
