Note: Hydrogen sulfide is neurotoxic and damages brains, which can cause all different kinds of effects, including hallucinations and delusions, personality change, memory loss, paralysis, unconsciousness, coma, death. It also heats you up sometimes, so as you go insane you may strip naked. You're most apt to be turned into a neuro-zombie yourself in the wee hours or when in, near or downwind of low-lying areas like bodies of water, valleys, canyons, basements, underground parking garages, that kind of thing. Mostly though, hydrogen sulfide just kills you. If you smell anything strange, especially anything sweet, or like licorice, or flowers, and there's no discernible reason for it, you may be getting poisoned. If the fade smells, that doesn't mean the problem is gone either, because hydrogen sulfide causes 'olfactory fatigue' and you stop being ABLE to smell it, even if it's still present.
You can also be poisoned by touching contaminated matter. For example, some hydrogen sulfide blows by in the wee hours and adsorbs onto your car upholstery while you're asleep in bed. Then you get into your car and go driving the next day - you might fall unconscious at the wheel or slump over dead. Porous matter is most easily contaminated because it's got lots of surface area. That means cardboard, paper, cloth, fibrous stuff like insulation, powders or dusts of any kind, wood, concrete, generic trash. This is why numerous people have been found dead in garbage bins or at recycling centers - they're looking for cans or whatever to recycle and they're touching and moving the trash around and getting poisoned by contaminated matter.
Also, hydrogen sulfide is water-soluble, so any kind of water may be contaminated, and if you touch that water then you may sicken or die. In a lake there may be a blob of water that's contaminated four feet down, but ten feet away the water is fine. If you get in water and die then you'll know that you touched contaminated water. If you get in water and don't die, then you didn't touch contaminated water. That's how you'll be able to tell. Of course, there is somewhat of a downside to this detection method...
