Quote: "One person is dead after a car fire Sunday afternoon. It happened just after 1 p.m. at the end of Washburn Road in the far northwest part of the Las Vegas Valley. Firefighters found a fully involved car fire when they arrived on the scene. A bystander told firefighters there was someone inside the vehicle. That person said they tried to rescue them, but the fire was too intense. Firefighters responded to the original call of a crash that led to the car fire, but later determined there was no crash at all. The vehicle was still in the roadway. The car was completely destroyed by the fire."

Quote: "The coronavirus may have been circulating for weeks undetected in Washington state, a preliminary finding that could mean hundreds of undiagnosed cases, researchers said Sunday after analyzing genetic samples from two people."

Note: I said a few days ago that I thought it was likely that there were over 1,000 infections in the US already because this has been spreading quietly for some time. I'm even more sure of that now. Wherever you are, if it's not already in your community, it will be soon...

2020-03-01 - NASA images show a decrease in China's pollution related to coronavirus shutdown:

Note: That's not as good as it sounds. One of the things staving off the full effect of global warming is 'global dimming' caused by our pollution. That's the unsolvable conundrum. If we stop polluting, 'global dimming' fades, the world warms suddenly and dramatically, and the many climate feedbacks go nuts reinforcing each other, resulting in our extinction in fairly short order. And if we don't stop polluting then we will be wiped out too, even more certainly, but somewhat more slowly. The ultimate outcome is the same. Our addiction to fossil fuels is fatal, but the withdrawal symptoms are also fatal, and quicker...

'After an investigation at PES, the PFD Hazmat Task Force cannot confirm the initial report of a mercaptan release at the refinery. PES did clean equipment today, but the actual source of the smell remains undetermined,' the department wrote on Twitter."

Quote: "'Despite some initial reports that perhaps some cleaning work they were doing on a tank down there was the source of the odor. We actually went in and checked that vessel or hazmat taskforce did, and did not find that to be the source of the odors,' said Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel."

Quote: "According to Theil, the PES Refinery did have a reading on their fenceline monitoring system that suggests some type of product went across their facility, from an unknown location around 7:30 to 8 a.m."

Quote: "We were evacuated at 1500 Mkt. The smell was overwhelming. Scary not knowing where it was coming from."

2020-03-02 - FEMA prepping for possible coronavirus emergency declaration:

Note: I won't be surprised if an emergency is declared, followed by martial law, followed by presidential elections being canceled until COVID-19 is eradicated, which, as has been mentioned, may never happen. Dictators seizing and consolidating power during emergencies is a time-honored tactic that dates at least as far back as the Roman Empire. All the ingredients are there: 1) a leader who wants to be a dictator; 2) a judiciary stacked by that person to provide a semblance of legitimacy; 3) a following that prioritizes him over truth, justice or their own country; and 4) an emergency. Plus, the federales may be waiting to arrest Trump for bank fraud, tax fraud and obstruction of justice if he were to lose the election. But if there IS no election, problem solved!

Note: So the person checking to see if people had coronavirus at the airport had coronavirus at the airport. How many people did he or she give the virus to while checking them? This reminds me of a time when a friend's antivirus software got infected by a virus, and when he used it to check all his executables for viruses, it infected all of them. I connected my laptop to his network, and he wanted to make sure I wasn't bringing him a virus, so he used his virus-infected antivirus software to check my executables and infected all of them too. We both ended up having to reformat our hard drives and reinstall everything...

They noticed a suite of behaviors that correspond to a survival response commensurate with how they behaved during the last mass extinction 66 million years ago, according to the new study. 'When we finally put all this together and saw the result, for me it was that moment when the hair on the back of your neck stands up,' said marine biologist David Gruber, from The City University of New York, to Newsweek. 'It was like, Oh my goodness, [the corals] are doing exactly what they did back then.'"

2020-03-17 - Dire new report forces US and UK to change course on coronavirus strategy:

Quote: "The scientists emphasised there will be no end in sight to the measures until a vaccine is created."

Note: Basically, the report suggests that if we go into full lockdown mode until a vaccine is available then the US would see more than a million fewer deaths and the UK would see 250,000 fewer deaths. If we don't go into full lockdown then many more people will die due to overloaded healthcare systems. To put those numbers in context, in World War II, 405,000 US soldiers died, so lack of lockdown would cost more than twice as many lives as we lost in all of World War II. So, is that even possible, full lockdown for that long? No schools or bars or restaurants or theaters for 12-18 months or so? And there's no guarantee that there'll be a vaccine ready in 18 months either. Maybe we'll never come up with one quickly enough to make a difference before the virus mutates again...

Note: They call it a bombshell, but I half expected this, and not just in California. Schools and school buses are excellent places for the virus to spread from person to person. I'd be surprised if ALL schools in the US aren't shuttered until fall, and I won't be overly surprised if they don't actually reopen in the fall.
