Event Update For 2020-02-17

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

In Australia, spat over firefighter’s political rant caps a summer of anger – “Tell the prime minister to go and get fucked”

At the height of Australia’s bush fire crisis last month, the exhausted firefighter’s emotion was raw.

Paul Parker had been battling blazes around Nelligen, in southern New South Wales state. Seven homes had been lost in the village, and his own residence severely damaged, on the day his comments went viral.

“Tell the prime minister to go and get fucked, from Nelligen. We really enjoy doing this shit,” he told a television news crew as he leaned out of his firetruck window, accusing Australia’s leader, Scott Morrison, of providing inadequate support for the volunteer brigades on the disaster’s front lines. Morrison had faced public anger for vacationing in Hawaii as the fires escalated, and for pinning responsibility on state-level officials to shoulder the burden of the emergency response.

At the end of that day, 4 January 2020, Parker collapsed on the roadside. [more]

Rare blue auroras captured over Norway, 'strangest in years'

Yes, there really are cracks in Earth's magnetic field. One of them opened on Feb. 18th, sparking some of the strangest auroras in years. First, the night sky turned blue over the Lofoten Islands of Norway:

"After snow, sleet, and heavy wind all day, the clouds parted for a 2 hour display of spectacular pale green, blue, and purple auroras over the mountains of Reine," says photographer Matthew Steinberg.

Blue auroras are rare. Auroras are usually green, and sometimes red. Those are the colors produced by oxygen when it is excited by electrons raining down from space. Blue is a sign of nitrogen. [more]

Graph of the Day: The Future of Ocean Acidification

New research by NOAA, the University of Maryland, and international partners published in Nature Scientific Reports shows that the changing chemistry of seawater has implications for continued greenhouse gas absorption.

The ocean has been playing an important role in helping slow down global climate change by removing the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. However, decades of ocean observations show that the CO2 absorbed by the ocean is changing the chemistry of seawater, a process known as ocean acidification. The study discusses the reduced buffering capacity of the ocean as pH levels drop and its implications for reducing the ocean’s role as a CO2 sink in the future.
