Event Update For 2020-01-06

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

  2. The sad truth about our boldest climate target – Limiting global warming to 1.5˚C is almost certainly not going to happen. Admitting this need not end hope.

No graphic I’ve ever seen better captures humanity’s climate situation. If we had peaked and begun steadily reducing emissions 20 years ago, the necessary pace of reductions would have been around 3 percent a year, which is … well, “realistic” is too strong — it still would have required rapid, coordinated action of a kind never seen before in human history — but it was at least possible to envision.

We didn’t, though. We knew about climate change, there were scientists yelling themselves blue in the face, but we didn’tturn the wheel. Global emissions have only risen since then. Humanity has put more CO2 in the atmosphere since 1988, when climate scientist James Hansen first testified to Congress about the danger of climate change, than it did in all of history prior. France and EU ready to respond to US threat of new tariffs

France has warned it will retaliate with the full backing of the European Union if the United States imposes tariffs on up to $2.4 billion worth of French products, including Champagne, Roquefort cheese, handbags, and lipstick.

The U.S. is considering 100% tariffs on some French goods in response to France's decision to tax the local digital business of major tech companies like Google and Facebook. With a decision on the tariffs expected in coming days, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire met Tuesday with EU trade chief Phil Hogan in Paris.

“We believe that the American project of sanctions against the French digital tax is unfriendly, inappropriate and illegitimate," Le Maire said.

If U.S. tariffs were to be imposed, “we would bring the case to the World Trade Organization and we would be ready to react," Le Maire said. [more]

Trump Administration Quietly Goes After Disability Benefits

    [just don't tax the mega-rich!]

Some Americans could lose Social Security Disability Insurance benefits under a recent Trump administration proposal ― a change that could affect thousands of people but that has received little attention since it was first floated in November.

Under the proposed change, the government would look more closely at whether certain disability insurance recipients still qualify as “disabled” after they’ve already been awarded those benefits. While recipients already have to demonstrate their continuing disability every few years, the proposal would ramp up the examinations, potentially running still-eligible beneficiaries out of the program. "It was just hot and some dark clouds gathered and the next thing, lightning struck and killed a woman. There were also about 20 beasts which were killed," said Chief Njelele.

He said the lightning bolt left many with questions.

"Insignificant showers fell soon after the lightning strike but everyone was left shell-shocked. I have visited the affected people and everyone was still in shock," he said.

One of the affected villagers, Mr Timothy Mlambo said he was inside his kitchen hut when it suddenly caught fire.

"There was a huge bang and the next thing I realised that my hut was on fire. When I dashed out, I discovered that three or four houses belonging to my neighbours were also on fire but it was not even raining," he said. [more]

The Flu Season May Yet Turn Ugly, CDC Warns

The United States may be headed into a bad flu season, according to figures recently released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of the last week of December, “widespread” flu activity was reported by health departments in 46 states. More ominously, a second measure — the percentage of patients with flu symptoms visiting medical clinics — shot up almost to the peak reached at the height of the 2017-18 flu season, which was the most severe in a decade.

This year’s flu vaccine may not be particularly effective against the strain of the virus now widespread in the United States, experts said. But even so, it’s worth getting the shot: People who are vaccinated fare better if struck by the flu than those who are not. Idaho resort looks for skier after avalanche; 2 others die

Officials were searching Wednesday for a missing skier at an Idaho resort where a series of avalanches killed two skiers and injured five others the day before.

The Silver Mountain Resort was closed Wednesday "to focus all available resources on the search,'' the resort said on Facebook.

The resort said it received a telephone call Wednesday morning from a concerned family member of the missing skier.

“This person has been confirmed to be skiing yesterday at Silver during the time of the avalanche,'' the resort posted on Facebook. "An intense search is currently underway with Silver Mountain Ski Patrol as well as multiple teams and dog units from various agencies." [more]

2019 was the second hottest year on record and ended the hottest decade in history, the European Union's climate monitoring service said Wednesday.

Australia’s Wildfire Crisis: Key Numbers Behind the Disaster

Fire-Ravaged Australia Sees Only Mild Relief After Hot, Dry Year

Australia’s fire-ravaged east isn’t expected to see immediate relief after the nation suffered the hottest and driest year on record.

Rainfall in the nation’s most-populous region is expected to be average or less for the coming months, while above-normal temperatures will continue to sear the world’s driest inhabited continent, the Bureau of Meteorology said Thursday in its annual climate statement. It also confirmed that 2019 was the hottest year in temperature records since 1910 and the driest in data going back to 1900. [more; also not @ SOTT]

Why the rain in Australia makes it harder to fight wildfires

With more than 100 fires still burning in Victoria and New South Wales, Australia, rain would seem like a welcome relief.

But for firefighters battling the blazes, the wetness makes it nearly impossible for them to properly put the flames out -- leaving little solace in an already devastating situation.

The spotty rain hitting the region does not allow firefighters to back burn, which is the essential process of setting fires to control the progress of the bushfire and, in turn, putting a stop to them entirely, Inspector Ben Shepherd with New South Wales Rural Fire Service told ABC News' chief meteorologist Ginger Zee on Tuesday.
