Event Update For 2018-05-10

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

  1. Thanks Jonny, for another stellar report on the deteriorating conditions for life on Earth.

Filling the wells with water won't help with WATER SOLUABLE H2S will it? Won't it just contaminate the water they use? This volcanic eruption and lava spread are becoming an island sized problem.

Trump issues disaster declaration for Hawaii volcano damage

President Trump on Friday approved a disaster declaration for Hawaii as the state deals with damage from a volcanic eruption on its largest island.
The White House announced Friday night that federal funding had been approved for local recovery efforts in the area affected by the Kilauea volcanic eruption and earthquakes that began early last month. [more]

[meeting my oldest son for breakfast at Aunt Jenny's truck stop - be back later with more]

  2. Filling the wells with water will help. That's how sewer traps in homes keep hydrogen sulfide from the sewer system from getting into homes. The water absorbs some H2S but can't absorb more than a certain amount. And it stays closest to the bottom so the bottom of the well will saturate and then stop absorbing H2S from below. The top may give off a little if it the wells get shaken up and the water mixed, but it shouldn't be enough to cause a problem. But what if the wells themselves just collapse or disintegrate from shaking? Then you probably won't want to be around there, because who knows what will happen then.

  3. Thanks for the analysis, Jonny.

  4. The Secret Life of Trees: The astonishing science of what trees feel and how they communicate

Wohlleben illustrates the centrality of trees in Earth's ecosystem with a story about Yellowstone National Park that demonstrates "how our appreciation for trees affects the way we interact with the world around us":

It all starts with the wolves. Wolves disappeared from Yellowstone, the world's first national park, in the 1920s. When they left, the entire ecosystem changed. Elk herds in the park increased their numbers and began to make quite a meal of the aspens, willows, and cottonwoods that lined the streams.

Vegetation declined and animals that depended on the trees left. The wolves were absent for seventy years. When they returned, the elks' languorous browsing days were over. As the wolf packs kept the herds on the move, browsing diminished, and the trees sprang back. The roots of cottonwoods and willows once again stabilized stream banks and slowed the flow of water. This, in turn, created space for animals such as beavers to return. These industrious builders could now find the materials they needed to construct their lodges and raise their families. The animals that depended on the riparian meadows came back, as well. The wolves turned out to be better stewards of the land than people, creating conditions that allowed the trees to grow and exert their influence on the landscape. [more]

Overwintering fires are a concern in Northern Rockies

Fires that burned extremely hot due to an accumulation of fuels or drier than normal ground cover, may hibernate in organic soils that provide a continuous supply of fuel.

Of greater concern are the ones that materialize on the edge of a fire where there is abundant access to unburned vegetation. [more]
