The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

The effects of encroaching deserts and of fire storms on terrestrial forests originally developed under moderate conditions distinct from those emerging under rapid global warming and extreme weather events may have been underestimated. Average global temperatures do not tell the story — it is the increasingly frequent weather anomalies which do. Powerful psychological factors prevent many scientists from expressing their worst fears, a phenomenon dubbed as “scientific reticence”.
As the tropical climate zones expand toward the poles, moderate climate zones shift polar-ward and are contracting where they clash with polar-derived cold air and ice melt water flow through weakened jet stream boundaries. As climate zones are shifting at a rate of 56-111 km per decade and ecosystems have only a short time to adapt, arid zones expand and droughts and fires consume the moderate-climate forests and formerly fertile habitats. Allen et al. (2012) suggest the increase in black carbon aerosols and tropospheric ozone constitute significant factors generating a polar-ward shift of moderate climate zones. [more]

Snow, ice and heavy rain have caused power outages to tens of thousands of homes. Authorities urged people to stay off the roads after a motorist was killed by a falling tree. Heavy snowstorms wreaked havoc across the southeast of France overnight Thursday. A 63-year-old driver was killed as he tried to remove a fallen tree from the icy roads and another tree fell on him in the commune of Roche. Another man who had helped him was injured. About 140,000 people were left without electricity in the departments of Drome, Isere, Rhone and Ardeche, power company Enedis said. Train traffic was expected to be interrupted in and around Grenoble at least until Friday afternoon because of fallen trees on the tracks. Cars and trucks were left stuck in the snow and many roads were closed across the region. Authorities urged people to avoid the roads. [more]

I was worried too about the security aspect of placing vast amounts of medical data in the digital cloud. Think about the recent hacks on banks or the 2013 data breach suffered by the retail giant Target - now imagine a similar event was inflicted on the healthcare data of millions. [more]

Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the mysterious death of a young woman whose body was discovered near a sewage treatment plant.
The woman was found dead early Monday morning near the entrance to the wastewater treatment plant in the town of Athol, about 40 miles northwest of Worcester. Police have identified her as Kelsey Clifford, 26, who was a resident of Leominster, a city approximately 30 miles east of Athol.
