The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A team including members from GNS Science have identified an ancient mega-volcano that could have the largest known caldera on Earth.
The feature is on the crest of Benham Rise, an oceanic plateau off the Philippines coast. A caldera is a depression created when a volcano collapses after the emptying of its magma chamber in an eruption, or the withdrawal of the magma.
About 150km in diameter, the caldera is comparable to the biggest impact craters on Earth and bigger than any other known calderas on this planet. It's more comparable is size to calderas elsewhere in the solar system. [more]

Adding plants and trees to the landscapes near factories and other pollution sources could reduce air pollution by an average of 27 percent, new research suggests. [as it slowly kills them]
The study shows that plants - not technologies - may also be cheaper options for cleaning the air near a number of industrial sites, roadways, power plants, commercial boilers and oil and gas drilling sites.
In fact, researchers found that in 75 percent of the counties analyzed, it was cheaper to use plants to mitigate air pollution than it was to add technological interventions - things like smokestack scrubbers - to the sources of pollution.
"The fact is that traditionally, especially as engineers, we don't think about nature; we just focus on putting technology into everything," said Bhavik Bakshi, lead author of the study and professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at The Ohio State University.
"And so, one key finding is that we need to start looking at nature and learning from it and respecting it. There are win-win opportunities if we do - opportunities that are potentially cheaper and better environmentally." [more; duh]

A 35-year-old woman was mauled to death by a leopard in Baansi village of Rudraprayag district's Jakholi block on Friday. The victim, identified as Sudha Devi, was going to the jungle to collect fodder for livestock when she was attacked.
This is the second death in Rudraprayag district in the past 48 hours and the third death this week in Uttarakhand. It is also the sixth death due to leopard attack in Uttarakhand since October this year. [more]

A missing hiker has been found dead in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, according to the National Park Service.
On November 4th, the Inyo County Sheriff's Office received a call about a missing hiker in the park.
The missing man, later identified as 40-year-old Alan Stringer from Huntington Beach, started the hike in the Bishop area on Sunday, but never showed up back home the next day.
Stringer reportedly did not tell anyone where he planned to hike or what routes he might take.
Deputies say that Stinger had recently taken mountaineering training courses and was equipped for day hiking only.
He had a device that he usually hiked with, but it was never turned on. [more]
