The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on Dec. 9 denied the tribes' motion to halt construction and on Dec. 23 denied a petition for reconsideration of that decision. The Navy is beginning to "recycle" the venerable aircraft carrier after a half-century in service.

On December 9, the Navy released its 30-year shipbuilding plan. With the ambitious goal of building a 546-ship fleet by 2051, the plan calls for 404 new vessels to be built as 304 are retired.

Fourteen of those 304 vessels are nuclear-powered and will be recycled as part of the Navy's Ship-Submarine Recycling Program, a unique effort dedicated to the safe disposal of decommissioned nuclear-powered vessels. [more]

A 53-year-old man in Nashville was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a man during a face mask dispute, and then brandishing metal baseball bats at police officers.

The man, Jerry Cowan, is facing several charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest, records show. Cowan was involved in an argument with a man at an apartment building on Sunday because Cowan was not wearing a face covering, Nashville's WSMV-TV reported. [more]

Maryland, a state that has wrestled with some of the most egregious SWAT and no-knock cases in the country, remains mired in controversy.

The state has a long record of SWAT debacles. After police wrongfully raided a mayor’s house and killed his dogs in 2008, Maryland required police to report every SWAT raid. Between 2010 and 2014, police in Maryland conducted more than 8,000 raids, killing nine people and injuring almost a hundred civilians.

Despite controversies, statistics were no longer collected after 2014. Strong police unions have blocked numerous efforts at legislative reform. As a result, Marylanders continue to be vexed by the same kind of deadly no-knock debacles that killed Breonna Taylor last March in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lemp lived with his parents in a sedate neighborhood in Potomac, Maryland. According to the county report, a no-knock raid was justified “due to Lemp being ‘anti-government,’ ‘anti-police,’ currently in possession of body armor, and an active member of the Three Percenters,” a far-right paramilitary group that discussed government resistance.

Belonging to a group is not illegal. And while the group spoke out against actions by white supremacists during the 2017 deadly riots in Charlottesville, Virginia, they were also known to show up at protests to push back against efforts by Black Lives Matter. Many of those efforts focused on saving the lives of people caught in confrontations with police — similar to the situation Lemp found himself in.

Lemp's views on gun ownership and the fear of tyranny seem to have driven his activism. One of his last tweets declared, “The Constitution is dead.” A little over two months later, police killed him. [more; no opposing views tolerated]

Apaches' fight over Arizona copper mine goes before US court

A federal judge will hear arguments Wednesday from a group of Apaches that has been fighting a proposed copper mine in eastern Arizona.

Apache Stronghold recently sued the U.S. Forest Service to try to stop the agency from turning over a parcel of land to Resolution Copper, a joint venture of global mining companies Rio Tinto and BHP. [more]

More than 2 million miles of natural gas pipelines run throughout the United States. In Appalachia, they spread like spaghetti across the region.

Many of these lines were built in just the past five years to carry natural gas from the Marcellus Shale region of Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, where hydraulic fracturing has boomed. West Virginia alone has seen a fourfold increase in natural gas production in the past decade.

Such fast growth has also brought hundreds of safety and environmental violations, particularly under the Trump administration’s reduced oversight and streamlined approvals for pipeline projects. While energy companies promise economic benefits for depressed regions, pipeline projects are upending the lives of people in their paths.

If residents do not want pipelines on their land, they can pursue legal action against the energy company rather than taking a settlement. However, this can result in the use of eminent domain.

Eminent domain is a right given by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to companies to access privately held property if the project is considered important for public need. Compensation is decided by the courts, based on assessed land value, not taking into consideration the intangibles tied to the loss of the land surrounding one’s home, such as loss of future income. Millions of Americans could face eviction under President Joe Biden's executive order extending federal protections for renters through March 31.

About one-third of all Americans, roughly 107 million people, are renters. Nearly 40 million have been protected by some form of an eviction moratorium since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the scattershot collection of local, state and federal protections has made navigating the bureaucratic process nearly impossible for the average tenant.

Housing experts and advocates said loopholes within the executive order must be addressed to keep millions safely in their homes in the middle of a deadly pandemic.
