Event Update For 2019-01-08

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

  1. Hey Jonny & everyone: I'm back home.

Shortly after the plane landed in Philly last night a naked man drove the wrong way up I-95, was stopped by state troopers and taken to a hospital for evaluation. I haven't seen any follow-up yet.

2nd. When my wife picked me up she told me that after the power went out a few days ago (from the high winds here) my computer wouldn't restart, so she took it to the shop and it's gonna cost me $600 for the repair, replacement of parts, and all my accumulated data retrieval.

3rd: squirrels absconded with one of the suet feeders I use to feed the birds. They carried it off, dismantled it and of course left it empty. I found the broken mess in my front garden this morning.

Not much to report this morning so I'll wait til things develop to post.

Also, that promised stat analysis of the past year's data will have to wait til I get my computer back. I can't access the whole page of JJFH (& the easy to use archive links Jonny provides) from my android phone.

    More later.

  2. Congrats on successfully making it all the way across the county and back! And yuck, computer probs suck, sorry to hear that. I backup important data regularly to seven (7!) external hard drives, and some data to three different cloud storage services too. That's almost certainly overkill, but I figure too many backups is better than not enough backups if something goes awry, and eventually something always does.

  3. Yeah, well you are orders of magnitude more savvy than I with the tech.

I bought an external storage device from the guy the last time this happened, but never backed anything on to it. Forgot why & how to now.

When she told me about it, I wasn't even concerned (except for the expense)
and would probably have just scrapped the p.o.s. had I been home. I told her that nothing on it was going to matter to anyone soon (esp. after Malcolm Light's recent paper on Arctic News, that I posted).

It's amazing how freed of concern I've become over the years. I used to worry about everything, now I don't care about most everything.

78 Percent Of Americans Are Living Paycheck To Paycheck – Including Many Government Workers Affected By The Shutdown
In just a few days, this will officially be the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, and there is no end in sight. President Trump is pledging that he will not sign any spending bill unless it includes funding for a border wall, and the Democrats are promising their supporters that they will never agree to a single penny for a wall. This could be the confrontation that ends up defining Trump’s presidency, and whoever backs down now is going to look incredibly weak. But the longer this shutdown lasts, the more painful things are going to become for the hundreds of thousands of federal workers that are going without pay, and for the hundreds of thousands of workers that are employed by government contractors that rely on business from the federal government.

You should never play a game of chicken with somebody that is crazier than you are. In this case, it looks like both sides fully expect the other party to blink first, but the truth is that neither side is likely to yield any time soon.

So the days ahead are likely to be exceedingly painful for most federal workers, because just like the population as a whole, most of them are living paycheck to paycheck.

In fact, one survey found that 78 percent of American workers are currently living paycheck to paycheck

Large waterspout spotted over Cancun waters, Mexico

A large waterspout that emerged from a cloud over the sea at Cancun caught the attention of many, including geologist Sergio Almazán.

Almazán, who is an engineer from the National Polytechnic Institute, was out walking when he spotted the large funnel. On his social media account, he posted a 42-second video of the unusual spout as it hovered over Cancun waters.

[There were 2 of these healthy critters in my son's backyard at night three days ago. He said they roam the neighborhood, along with a big cat variety people have taken pix of and posted to the local news. I saw a large deer on my way to the beach one evening, too.]

[Is there a chance (ie. if it's easy) you could move the red circle Blogger button so that the bottom of the circle is tangent to the bottom of the 'commenting as' box? My fat fingers hit it too often using this phone to comment, unless I'm really careful, erasing my comment.]

  5. The Blogger-specific buttons and stuff are out of my control - that's done on the back end, on Google's servers. That's also where they decide how to format things depending on what kind of device is viewing the page, so you'd have to give Google the suggestions, which they would probably ignore. Heh.

  6. Here's a nice little paper from the "Ivory Tower of Smart Fellers" on the subject of past episodes of the Jumping Jack Flash...

  7. That's a good article. They got it right - this has happened before, and when it does, it's bad news. If they'd only have asked whether this could be happening NOW, and then asked what would the effects be if it were, and then asked if we're seeing the expected effects, then they'd be right where I am. For some reason nobody ever seems to ask that important question: could this be happening now? I don't know why that's such a barrier for people, especially scientists, who are sort of in the business of asking questions like that.

    1. The scientists that wrote the paper all have current jobs at high falutin Ivory Tower Universities. I'm betting the can't explore this happening again publicly, or even with their peers, because they'd probably catch some backlash that they don't want to deal with.

    2. BTW....I got the link to that paper from a post by Phosphorus 72 on the Black Bear News comment section. (The video about Malcolm Light's article on Arctic News). Here is a clipped part of the comment that caught my attention:

"Obviously the oceans and lakes are becoming anoxic/hypoxic and once enough anaerobic bacteria abound and start decomposing organic matter in the ocean then a vast amount of H2S will form and create a hypoxic environment here in the troposphere or at least at ground level. And H2S is already a major problem all over the world now.
So I don't think it would be a top-down phenomenon but a bottom up.
And here is something quite sobering:" --Here is where he had the link I posted above--

Phosphorus 72 and Physicas were engaged in a very intelligent debate about methane in the comments, among others. Kevin has attracted some very edjumacated smart fellers I tell ya.
