Quote: "Thac said the seawater in the bay turned red with abnormal scum on the surface before the fish died."
Note: The Daldykan River suddenly turned blood red near Norilsk (Russia) a few days ago too, mentioned in the 2016-09-07 update. Often when the water suddenly changes color like that, it's because the chemocline has risen suddenly to the surface, which smothers fish and releases accumulated methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the bottom of the body of water. It doesn't always turn red - there are many different kinds of bacteria and different colors can be the result. For example, the Inner Harbor suddenly turned milky green-white in coastal Baltimore in 2013, with a sulfur odor smelled, and the fish there all died, mentioned in the 2013-07-18 update...
2016-09-09 - Update on the massive fish kill at Lake Maninjau (Indonesia):
http://news.mongabay.com/2016/09/first-toba-now-maninjau-another-mass-fish-death-hits-an-indonesian-lake/
Quote: "The fish in Maninjau appear to have been either poisoned by hydrogen sulfide gas from hydrothermal vents on the lake floor or asphyxiated by a sudden depletion of oxygen in the water."
Note: Or both, since the two things go together. The ancient anaerobic bacteria and archaea that produce hydrogen sulfide like waters that have little or no oxygen, so as soon as oxygen levels plummet, there's an opening for that stuff to get reproducing, which is another self-reinforcing feedback...

There is no indication as to what killed them. The chair of public works, Councillor Danny Breen, says staff have been looking into it but are unable to pinpoint any contributing factors. http://www.tampabay.com/news/environment/wildlife/spilled-sewage-suspected-in-mass-bird-die-off-in-st-pete-beach/2293311
Quote: "An Eckerd College scientist who has been studying the state's skimmer population for 16 years says that the affected young birds go into convulsions, then flop over on their backs and die."
Quote: "The cause of death could be salmonella, a virus or even Red Tide, Forys said. Each of those potential causes, she said, could be related to the dumping of sewage."
Note: So they don't know what killed these birds. Hydrogen sulfide is commonly called 'sewer gas' so if there's leaked sewage then there's likely hydrogen sulfide in the area too. The convulsions - those are seizures. Could be the same thing killed these birds as knocked the birds out of the sky the other day in coastal Dorchester (Massachusetts), mentioned in the 2016-09-08 update...
