That's nearly five dead birds per meter of beach, officials say. The scale of the die-off is unprecedented along the Sound, longtime residents say. 'It's just mind-boggling,' said David Janka, a Cordova charter owner who passed along reports of dead birds from there as well as Valdez, Tatitlek and Chenega."

2016-01-08 - Sea stars, along with deep-diving birds, dying in Alaska:
http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/database/?pageid=event_desc&edis_id=BH-20160108-51601-USA
Quote: "She counted 118 dead murres and also saw hundreds of dead sea stars. 'It's really bad,' Raymond said. 'It's really depressing. The day we did the 118 murres and all those star fish, I was really upset.'"
Quote: "Almost all the dead birds are murres, seabirds that in the summer swim in huge rafts near Gull Island or offshore. On a still summer evening, huge flocks can be seen flying just feet above the ocean surface. With big, duck-like feet, black backs and white breasts, they look like penguins. On land they're helpless, but on sea they can swim and dive deep."
Note: I was wondering why it was THESE birds specifically, murres, that were dying. They answered the question, more or less. Off the coast of Alaska is one of the many places where scientists have found methane now venting from the sea floor. Around such methane vents, the ancient creatures that eat methane and produce hydrogen sulfide congregate in colonies, bacterial mats. So over time, first methane and then hydrogen sulfide starts dispersing from the ocean floor upwards. So either these birds are diving deep enough to be sickened by gases migrating toward the surface, or whatever they dive for to eat at those depths is already dead, so the birds are starving due to food-chain collapse. The sea stars live on the ocean bottom too...
