Event Update For 2020-10-26

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2020-10-26 - 'Sleeping giant' Arctic methane deposits starting to release, scientists find:
http://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/oct/27/sleeping-giant-arctic-methane-deposits-starting-to-release-scientists-find
http://www.newsbreak.com/news/2090522064310/sleeping-giant-arctic-methane-deposits-starting-to-release-scientists-find
http://www.realclearscience.com/2020/10/28/sleeping_giant_arctic_methane_deposits_starting_to_release_292809.html

Quote: "Scientists have found evidence that frozen methane deposits in the Arctic Ocean – known as the 'sleeping giants of the carbon cycle' – have started to be released over a large area of the continental slope off the East Siberian coast, the Guardian can reveal."

Quote: "The international team onboard the Russian research ship R/V Akademik Keldysh said most of the bubbles were currently dissolving in the water but methane levels at the surface were four to eight times what would normally be expected and this was venting into the atmosphere."

Quote: "At one location on the Laptev Sea slope at a depth of about 300 metres they found methane concentrations of up to 1,600 nanomoles per litre, which is 400 times higher than would be expected if the sea and the atmosphere were in equilibrium."

Quote: "The latest discovery potentially marks the third source of methane emissions from the region. Semiletov, who has been studying this area for two decades, has previously reported the gas is being released from the shelf of the Arctic – the biggest of any sea. For the second year in a row, his team have found crater-like pockmarks in the shallower parts of the Laptev Sea and East Siberian Sea that are discharging bubble jets of methane, which is reaching the sea surface at levels tens to hundreds of times higher than normal. This is similar to the craters and sinkholes reported from inland Siberian tundra earlier this autumn."

Note: It was just a matter of time before this sleeping giant woke up. Once that happens - and it's obviously happening - that's game over for the human race. We're all just waiting our turn for our name to scroll across the closing credits for the Humanity Show now. Well, we had a good run. Hopefully the next intelligent species to evolve will be smarter than us. And we're not gone yet. We still have lots of horrifying apocalyptic stuff to endure before the last human being dies, so we've got that to look forward to before we go extinct!

2020-10-26 - Arctic Sea ice not freezing in October for the first time since measurements began:

http://www.severe-weather.eu/news/arctic-ocean-sea-ice-2020-jet-stream-effect-winter-fa/

Note: The sea ice minimum this year was the second-lowest, after 2012. But the sea ice extent NOW is the lowest it's ever been measured. The ice is not replenishing normally, due to aberrant warm water and warm air temperatures. Check out some of the charts in the second link to see how unusual this is compared to any other year...

Scientists have found a sharp decline in nine insect-eating bird species in the lowlands of the central jungle in the space of a few decades. No equivalent decline was found among fruit-eating birds. This, they said, indicated that the climate crisis and its effect on insect populations may be to blame."

  1. Good Wednesday morning Jonny, and everyone.

As per the last article in today's post, Covid-19 is SHITTY! Not only that, it STINKS and the perpetrators are all full of it! You can use the test to wipe your ass and it'll have the same result. The stats smell funny, the data are stained and the conclusions are in the toilet.

The methane monster has arrived and it will be hard to keep it out of the news. We should start to see a warmer winter this year (global avg. temp rise from Dec. to Mar. in the northern hemisphere). Last year we had no significant snow and only a handful of truly cold days (and nights) here in s/e PA. [your results may vary due to geography]

Global warming due to loss of large ice masses and Arctic summer sea ice
    https://robinwestenra.blogspot.com/2020/10/global-warming-due-to-loss-of-large-ice.html [Nature]

    Abstract

Several large-scale cryosphere elements such as the Arctic summer sea ice, the mountain glaciers, the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheet have changed substantially during the last century due to anthropogenic global warming. However, the impacts of their possible future disintegration on global mean temperature (GMT) and climate feedbacks have not yet been comprehensively evaluated. Here, we quantify this response using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity. Overall, we find a median additional global warming of 0.43 °C (interquartile range: 0.39−0.46 °C) at a CO2 concentration of 400 ppm. Most of this response (55%) is caused by albedo changes, but lapse rate together with water vapour (30%) and cloud feedbacks (15%) also contribute significantly. While a decay of the ice sheets would occur on centennial to millennial time scales, the Arctic might become ice-free during summer within the 21st century. Our findings imply an additional increase of the GMT on intermediate to long time scales. [more]

Exclusive: expedition discovers new source of greenhouse gas off East Siberian coast has been triggered

Scientists have found evidence that frozen methane deposits in the Arctic Ocean – known as the “sleeping giants of the carbon cycle” – have started to be released over a large area of the continental slope off the East Siberian coast, the Guardian can reveal.

High levels of the potent greenhouse gas have been detected down to a depth of 350 metres in the Laptev Sea near Russia, prompting concern among researchers that a new climate feedback loop may have been triggered that could accelerate the pace of global heating. [more]

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/climate-scientists-throw-cold-water-213900012.html

Gavin Schmidt, a climatologist and director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, argued there is no evidence Arctic methane had a "big effect" even in earlier periods when the region was warmer than it is now.

The scientists who made the discovery, meanwhile, have acknowledged their work is preliminary, and said the scale of methane releases will not be confirmed until they return and analyze the data. Either way, "there is unlikely to be any major" climate effect "at this moment," Swedish scientist Örjan Gustafsson, told The Guardian from the research vessel. But he did maintain his stance that "the process has now been triggered." [more; Mann has a dismissive tweet about it here]

Barrels filled with toxic chemicals banned decades ago.

    Leaking.

And littered across the ocean floor.

“Holy crap. This is real,” Valentine said. “This stuff really is down there.

“It has been sitting here this whole time, right off our shore.”

As many as half a million of these barrels could still be underwater right now, according to interviews and a Times review of historical records, manifests and undigitized research. From 1947 to 1982, the nation’s largest manufacturer of DDT — a pesticide so powerful that it poisoned birds and fish — was based in Los Angeles.

An epic Superfund battle later exposed the company’s disposal of toxic waste through sewage pipes that poured into the ocean — but all the DDT that was barged out to sea drew comparatively little attention.

Shipping logs show that every month in the years after World War II, thousands of barrels of acid sludge laced with this synthetic chemical were boated out to a site near Catalina and dumped into the deep ocean — so vast that, according to common wisdom at the time, it would dilute even the most dangerous poisons. [WRONG!]

DDT is so stable it can take generations to break down. It doesn’t really dissolve in water but stores easily in fat. Compounding these problems is what scientists today call “biomagnification”: the toxin accumulating in the tissues of animals in greater and greater concentrations as it moves up the food chain. US corn crops are becoming increasingly sensitive to drought
    https://www.sott.net/article/443508-US-corn-crops-are-becoming-increasingly-sensitive-to-drought

A new Stanford study reveals that while yields have increased overall — likely due to new technologies and management approaches — the staple crop has become significantly more sensitive to drought conditions.

[SOTT]Comment: Yield is one thing, quality of product is another. And YouTuber Ice Age farmer has reported that numerous farmers are also documenting increasingly poor quality yields that are only good for animal fodder, meaning less product available for consumers. Also bear in mind that what an animal eats will impact the nutritional quality of its meat and, in turn, will lead to a deterioration in the health of the consumer.

To better understand how climate impacts to corn are evolving over time, the researchers call for increased access to field-level yield data that are measured independently of weather data, such as government insurance data that were previously available to the public but no longer are. 6. U.S. FCC votes to maintain 2017 repeal of net neutrality rules
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/fcc-votes-leave-2017-net-155043124.html

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission voted 3-2 on Tuesday to maintain its 2017 repeal of Obama-era net neutrality rules, even after a federal court directed a review of some provisions of the repeal.

The 2015 net neutrality rules barred internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking or slowing internet content or offering paid "fast lanes." Under President Donald Trump, the 2017 FCC order granted ISPs sweeping powers to recast how Americans use the internet, as long as they disclose changes.

A federal appeals court in October 2019 largely upheld the FCC’s repeal of the rules, but ordered the agency to reconsider the repeal's impact on public safety; regulations on attachments to utility poles; and the FCC’s ability to provide subsidies for broadband service. The FCC majority opted to leave the order unchanged.

The net neutrality repeal was effective in June 2018. ISPs have not changed how users access the internet, but consumer groups fear that they could move to raise prices or slow speeds selectively for some customers.

"It is patently obvious to all but the most devoted members of the net neutrality cult that the case against the (net neutrality repeal) was a sham," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said Tuesday.

Senator Ed Markey, a Democrat, said "without net neutrality protections, it’s just a matter of time before big broadband providers start raising prices, slowing down internet speeds, and making it harder for families, small business, and students to access the opportunities to recover and rebuild from this pandemic." The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Tuesday it will allow farmers to spray crops with weed killers based on the chemical dicamba that are sold by Bayer AG and other companies, after a U.S. appeals court blocked sales in June.

The decision is a boost for Bayer, which has been hammered by lawsuits over various chemicals in the United States since acquiring seed company Monsanto in 2018. Critics said it was another example of the Trump administration favoring business interests over regulations, just a week before the presidential election.
