Event Update For 2020-05-26

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2020-05-26 - Study indicates COVID-19 death rate among those who show symptoms is 1.3%:
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/05/200518144915.htm

Quote: "Is COVID-19 more deadly than the flu? It's a lot more deadly, concludes a new study by the University of Washington published May 7 in the journal Health Affairs. The study's results also project a grim future if the U.S. doesn't put up a strong fight against the spread of the virus. The national rate of death among people infected with the novel coronavirus -- SARS-CoV-2 -- that causes COVID-19 and who show symptoms is 1.3%, the study found. The comparable rate of death for the seasonal flu is 0.1%."

Note: That seems about right. An average flu season kills about 37,000 people in the US, although CONFIRMED flu cases is less than half of that. COVID-19's already killed almost 3 times as many people as an average flu year, including unconfirmed flu deaths, and it's done it in 4 months, with 8 months left to go for the first full year. Seeing as the standard flu has a mortality rate of between 0.1% and 0.2%, and COVID-19 is killing people at about 8 times the rate that the flu kills people, the 1.3% mortality rate lines up pretty well. If the average pace of deaths for the first 4 months extends across the next eight months then COVID-19 will have killed around 300,000 people in the US in the first year. That'd be surprisingly close to being on par with the deadly 1918 Spanish Flu, which killed 675,000 people in the US over TWO years. Maybe it won't be that bad. But the number of infections is still rising in 20 states AND people are now letting down their guard in states where the infection count is declining, so who knows. Time will tell!

2020-05-26 - Study finds masks significantly useful in curtailing spread of COVID-19:
http://www.ktvu.com/news/wearing-a-face-mask-can-reduce-coronavirus-transmission-by-up-to-75-percent-study-says
http://fightcovid19.hku.hk/hku-hamster-research-shows-masks-effective-in-preventing-covid-19-transmission/

Quote: "They found that when the mask was placed over the infected cage the infection rate dropped to just over 15 percent. That infection rate went up to 33 percent when the mask barrier was only used to cover the healthy hamsters’ cage. With no mask barriers at all, roughly two-thirds of the healthy hamsters were infected with the virus within a week, the study found."

Note: This may be the first study where they tested transmission of COVID-19 specifically rather than just generic droplets or aerosols. So it works best if those who are infected wear masks, it's half as effective if only the healthy wear masks, and if nobody wears masks then it spreads really fast. So if you're healthy and you don't want to be infected and you're near someone who IS infected, your odds of getting infected are lowest if THEY wear a mask, those odds double if only YOU wear a mask, and for the best odds of all of not getting infected, you both wear a mask. Also, now we know that hamsters may be COVID-19 carriers so avoid hamsters!

Nobody Ever Imagined That The Job Losses Would Get This Bad So Quickly
    http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/nobody-ever-imagined-that-the-job-losses-would-get-this-bad-so-quickly

If you tried to warn people in late 2019 that about 40 million Americans would lose their jobs by the middle of 2020, nobody would have believed you. Personally, I operate a website called “The Economic Collapse Blog”, and I wouldn’t have believed you either. Even though I have been loudly warning that this sort of an economic crisis was coming, I never imagined that we would lose so many jobs in such a short period of time. As I discussed the other day, more than a quarter of all jobs in the United States have already been wiped out, and the job losses just keep on coming. In fact, Boeing is currently in the process of laying off thousands of highly skilled workers… [more; see article below for details]

Jobless claims: Another 2.123 million Americans file for unemployment benefits
    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/coronavirus-covid-weekly-initial-jobless-claims-may-23-164848387.html

Another 2.123 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending May 23, exceeding economists’ expectations for 2.1 million initial jobless claims. The prior week’s figure was revised higher to 2.446 million from 2.438 million jobless claims. Over the past 10 weeks, more than 40 million Americans have filed for unemployment insurance.[more]

Boeing cutting more than 12,000 U.S. jobs, thousands more planned
    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-boeing-jobs/boeing-cutting-more-than-12000-u-s-jobs-with-thousands-more-planned-idUSKBN2332EP

The company announced in April it would cut 10% of its worldwide workforce of 160,000 by the end of 2020. Boeing said Wednesday 5,520 U.S. employees will take voluntary layoffs, and also disclosed it was notifying 6,770 workers of involuntary layoffs. [more]

Salaries Get Chopped for Many Americans Who Manage to Keep Jobs
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-05-27/salaries-get-chopped-for-many-americans-who-manage-to-keep-jobs

Companies across the U.S. are cutting salaries as they fight to survive the coronavirus, upending a key assumption in modern economics and raising another hurdle to rapid recovery.

The hard numbers won’t be in for months, but anecdotal evidence is piling up. On earnings calls, big businesses including The Container Store Group and Lyft have cited what they say are temporary salary reductions. Federal Reserve officials also have found plenty of supporting evidence.

The pandemic has triggered unemployment on a scale not seen since the Great Depression. Pay cuts for Americans who’ve managed to hold onto their jobs may hobble the return to normal. People will have to use a bigger chunk of their income for fixed obligations such as housing and other debts -- leaving less for the kind of spending that can help spark the economy back into life. San Francisco sanctions third world tent cities as a new way of life, both accepted and promoted. Mayor London Breed and her allies say they're the best option available. It's time to "embrace the inevitable," the officials say.

The encampments will have a lot of taxpayer support.

Inside San Francisco's "safe sleeping sites," where tents sit inside squares marked on the asphalt eight feet apart to promote social distancing, there are hand-washing stations, portable toilets, showers, meals, and security guards.

Santa Rosa also opened a sanctioned tent encampment this month. Seattle and Olympia, Washington, have them too. [more]

U.S. Hydropower Disaster Causes $1 Billion In Damages
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/u-hydropower-disaster-causes-1-220000101.html

A catastrophic dam failure at a Michigan hydropower facility this month has left thousands stranded, highlighting the fact that when it comes to clean energy, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns.

just as the spread of the virus begins to slow, major rainfall, combined with what could be kindly described as negligence, collapses a hydropower dam, requiring the evacuation of 10,000 residents near Midland, Michigan.

Now, as Midland residents move to sue the dam owner, the latter is pointing fingers at state regulators. Others are placing the blame squarely on FERC, the government body tasked with issuing licenses to generate electricity from dams.

Whoever is at fault, the tragedy raises critical questions of the viability of the renewables segment that has been hailed as the cheapest form of power the world over. [more]

When the U.S. recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the nation's rightful leader last year it did more than just trigger a bitter feud with socialist leader Nicolás Maduro. Increasingly, it's also unleashing a torrent of lawsuits.

The latest came Tuesday, when the Guaidó-appointed board of Citgo, the U.S. subsidiary of Venezuela's state oil company, filed a lawsuit in federal court in Houston against a former contractor seeking to recover millions of dollars in damages.

The lawsuit accuses José Manuel González and his Miami-based Petroleum Logistics Service Corp. of providing gifts including cash, jewelry, private artwork, chartered flights and even a handpicked Houston apartment to senior executives at Citgo. In exchange, officials paid González $20 million between 2014 and 2018 to provide goods and services to Citgo's parent company, PDVSA, at inflated prices.

"Citgo lost millions of dollars as a result," the lawsuit alleges. [more]
