Event Update For 2020-05-08

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

  1. "Shit happens" - that was pithy, Jonny!

Around here (s/e PA) we had 2 nights where temps got to freezing or below, but it's supposed to finally start warming up and staying there this week (though with the meandering jet stream, there's no guarantee).

i trust everyone is doing as well as you can.

Mulch being mainly ground up wood mixed with dirt, has the tendency to degrade and put off CH4 in the process. So a random lit cigarette butt or even intense sunlight may cause it to burst into flame (like a lot of tree stumps). Once insurance companies start pushing back, the mulch business may finally die.

i'm still trying to wrap up the semester (it was supposed to end on May 1st with Final Exams this week, but the school is giving students until the 15th to complete work; but - if the student decides they need more time, they can elect to take a T grade, meaning they have til JUNE to complete coursework. The college has said nothing about paying us for the extended time we have to work.)

Is the chilling truth that the decision to impose lockdown was based on crude mathematical guesswork?
    https://www.sott.net/article/434192-Is-the-chilling-truth-that-the-decision-to-impose-lockdown-was-based-on-crude-mathematical-guesswork

Professor Neil Ferguson of Imperial College "stepped back" from the Sage group advising ministers when his lockdown-busting romantic trysts were exposed. Perhaps he should have been dropped for a more consequential misstep. Details of the model his team built to predict the epidemic are emerging and they are not pretty. In the respective words of four experienced modellers, the code is "deeply riddled" with bugs, "a fairly arbitrary Heath Robinson machine", has "huge blocks of code - bad practice" and is "quite possibly the worst production code I have ever seen".

In this case, that phrase "the science" effectively means the Imperial College model, forecasting potentially hundreds of thousands of deaths, on the output of which the Government instituted the lockdown in March. Sage's advice has a huge impact on the lives of millions. Yet the committee meets in private, publishes no minutes, and until it was put under pressure did not even release the names of its members. We were making decisions based on the output of a black box, and a locked one at that.

It has become commonplace among financial forecasters, the Treasury, climate scientists, and epidemiologists to cite the output of mathematical models as if it was "evidence". The proper use of models is to test theories of complex systems against facts. If instead we are going to use models for forecasting and policy, we must be able to check that they are accurate, particularly when they drive life and death decisions. This has not been the case with the Imperial College model.

At the time of the lockdown, the model had not been released to the scientific community. When Ferguson finally released his code last week, it was a reorganised program different from the version run on March 16.

Worse, the code does not allow for large variations among groups of people with respect to their susceptibility to the virus and their social connections. An infected nurse in a hospital is likely to transmit the virus to many more people than an asymptomatic child. Introducing such heterogeneity shows that the threshold to achieve herd immunity with modest social distancing is much lower than the 50-60 per cent implied by the Ferguson model. One experienced modeller tells us that "my own modelling suggests that somewhere between 10 per cent and 30 per cent would suffice, depending on what assumptions one makes." [more]

The U.S. economy may be in for a ‘square root’–shaped recovery — and you won’t like it any more than algebra class
    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-us-economy-may-be-in-for-a-square-root-shaped-recoveryand-you-wont-like-it-any-more-than-algebra-class-2020-05-08

Some strategists expect the shape of the recovery to resemble a “V”: growth rocketing straight up and to the right after months of pent-up energy. Others more cautiously propose a gradual curve, like a “U.” Alternately, a “W” might suggest a double-dip recession.

Now add to that alphabet soup a square root, which is what analysts at Ned Davis Research are forecasting. If you thought math class was a slog, the economy visualized by a square-root symbol won’t warm your heart.

The Ned Davis analysts, Pat Tschosik and Rob Anderson, didn’t coin the phrase. Famed investor George Soros may have been the first to use it. [more]

The White House's coronavirus task force response coordinator, Deborah Birx, said in a recent meeting that "there is nothing from the CDC that I can trust," The Washington Post reported.

Birx and others reportedly feared that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was using inflated data on coronavirus death and case rates.

One internal Trump administration model recently projected that coronavirus deaths would reach a whopping 3,000 deaths per day by June 1, which is double the current rate. [more]

there is no analogous situation in the past to the present, and so all the predictions based on past performance will be misleading. The chartists and analysts claim that all markets act on the same patterns, which are reflections of human nature, and so seeking correlations of volatility and valuation that "worked" in the past will work in 2020.

Does anyone really believe the correlations of the past decade or two are high-probability predictors of the future as the entire brittle construct of fictional capital and extremes of globalization and financialization all unravel at once? [more]

  5. John Rao: Pandemic reaction is a 'horrifying illustration' of the 'diabolical disorientation' accompanying ravages of modernity
    https://www.sott.net/article/434190-John-Rao-Pandemic-reaction-is-a-horrifying-illustration-of-the-diabolical-disorientation-accompanying-ravages-of-modernity

But what I do believe an educator needs to stress is the way in which a controllable pandemic has been transformed into a totally unnecessary pandemonium; a horrifying illustration of the diabolical disorientation accompanying all of the ravages of modernity, and one that has allowed a painfully hollow modern society to titillate itself with the "feel" of living through the Bubonic Plague without actually doing so.

when they tell young or otherwise healthy persons that they are in the same condition as the weakest of the elderly or the already ill; when they say that in order to protect itself the vast mass of the population has to abandon its livelihood, the well-being of its country, the cultural life of its civilization, and the tools required for its eternal salvation they must be dismissed for what they actually are: quacks.

We find ourselves today at the mercy of well educated, possibly well meaning, but ultimately highly dangerous and arrogant guides of this sort. These Masters of Them That Know are pressing us to destroy everything that we hold dear for the sake of creating an antiseptic, barren, soulless world unfit for human beings to live in — and die in — with dignity. It will take calm study when and if this pandemonium ends to determine the full genesis and complexity of the quackery involved, but it certainly is clear that all of the destructive forces that play a role in the modern world, along with all of those who have voluntarily succumbed to them, have had their unfortunate part in it.

These include the media, which have far surpassed their traditional display of criminal irresponsibility by whipping the world into a state of mass hysteria and terrorized paralysis. The media have been accompanied in their work of diabolical disorientation by a political establishment that permits the cowed masses to venture forth from their cells only under the condition of donning the current yellow Star of David: the face mask. Both serve the cause of vaccine mad ideologues who smell a profit to be made from the panicked mob begging for its supposed physical salvation at any cost. So effectively has this work of unleashing a pandemonium been accomplished that it is now hard to determine whether it is the terrorized masses themselves or the actual purveyors of the great dread who are most vigorously encouraging the chaining of men and women to the dark, back wall of Plato's cave. A wave of bankruptcies, surging taxes, and Americans harboring lasting scars from coronavirus lockdowns — the head of world’s largest asset manager warns of grim outlook

The era of coronavirus has already been hard on the American psyche, but the CEO of the world’s largest asset manager cautions that everyone should brace for even rougher days ahead, as the U.S. attempts to emerge from the worst public-health crisis in more than a century.

BlackRock’s Chief Executive Larry Fink forecast a dour near-term outlook for the economy as states and businesses grapple with reopening from COVID-19 lockdowns that have likely driven the U.S., and the rest of the world, into a deep recession, according to a report from Bloomberg News.

The news organization reported that Fink, speaking privately with clients of a wealth advisory firm, outlined an unattractive future in which the economy continues to weaken, bankruptcies soar and American consumers — the lifeblood of economic vitality in America — remain psychologically scarred from the impact of the deadly pathogen that has infected more than 3.7 million people (1.2 million in the U.S. alone) and claimed more than 260,000 lives globally, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Adding insult to injury, Fink warned that even as that brutal scenario plays out, taxes on corporations and individuals would eventually need to be raised to finance the trillions of dollars in economic aid that has been doled out by the government and the Federal Reserve to dampen the immediate financial harm wrought by efforts to mitigate the viral outbreak.
