Event Update For 2016-07-03

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

    Micro-plastics threaten ocean's ecosystem

Larval fish are becoming addicted to consuming micro-beads, according to a new study by a group of Swedish researchers.

Every year, about 8 million tonnes of plastic enters the oceans. When looking at micro-beads alone, around 100,000 micro-beads are washed down the sink each time a product with micro-beads is used.

About 96% of the eggs that were not exposed to micro-plastics, successfully hatched. In comparison, when exposed to large quantities of micro-plastics, the number of eggs that successfully hatched dropped to 81%.

Once hatched, the researchers observed the health and behavior of the fish. The fish that were exposed to micro-plastics were "smaller, slower, and more stupid" than the fish that were hatched in clean water, according to lead author Dr. Oona Lonnstedt, from Uppsala University.

  3. Robert Scribbler is a fascinating study of absolutely GREAT reporting and UNBELIEVABLE denial that we're at the end of the road for humanity. Here's his latest:

Fahrenheit 85.9 Near Arctic Ocean Shores — Extreme Heatwave Settles in Over North-Central Siberia, Canada’s Northern Tier

I'm no climate expert, but it just stands to reason that after all that heat melts the Arctic, it'll start sinking south to the equator, destroying all the habitat for wildlife, farm animals, plants and US! The climate is already so chaotic that farming is becoming ever more difficult and will eventually become impossible.

    [from the article]

Conditions in Context — 408 ppm CO2, 490 ppm CO2e is Forcing the Arctic to Warm Faster Than Lower Latitudes

This most recent Arctic heatwave occurs in a climate context that, taking into account for 408 ppm CO2 alone will likely result in 1-2 C of additional global warming (on top of current approximate 1 C warming since 1880s) over the long term. Meanwhile, total CO2e (including methane and other greenhouse gasses) measures of about 490 ppm imply 1.5 to 3 C of additional warming long term (on top of 1 C current) even if the present total greenhouse gas forcing is only maintained (not added to by human beings or the Earth System).

[this is classic low-balling of the numbers; a few years from now it will be seen to be "greater than expected"; in the comments section we see this]

Arriving at 490 CO2e requires that an equivalency factor of ~25 is used between CH4 and CO2. However, that assumes that pulses of CH4 are emitted, and then oxidized, so that the concentration of CH4 declines rapidly.

However, observed CH4 concentrations in the atmosphere have increased continuously. Thus, the assumptions of the conversion factor are not met. Under conditions of a continually increasing CH4 concentrations in the atmosphere, a better equivalency factor would be ~86, yielding a current CO2e on the close order of 560.

The graph of CH4 concentration has the same shape as the curve for CO2.
    ( )

Any rational consideration of CH4 in the atmosphere leads to more warming than has been discussed in public by IPCC.

IPCC WG1 (Watson et al., ) was written by atmospheric chemists, and neglected to consider that most of the methane cycle is not in the atmosphere.

[I expect that even THESE numbers are too low, but I'm no expert]
