Note: Not only that, but the ancient anaerobic bacteria and archaea that produce hydrogen sulfide thrive with low levels of oxygen (preferably none), and they eat dead stuff, so this water is not only becoming nicer for them but it's producing food for them too in the form of dead fish. If conditions become TOO nice, then it begets a chain reaction, where hydrogen sulfide kills fish, then the ancient organisms eat the dead fish, which produces more hydrogen sulfide, which kills more fish, and so on and so on...
