The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Note: For years a number of scientists have been saying that there's no risk of this happening. I always thought that was absurd. 90% of the heat the Earth is absorbing is going straight into the oceans - 3 or 4 Hiroshima-sized nuclear explosions worth of heat PER SECOND. A lot of methane hydrates are BARELY kept in their frozen state by high pressure and low temperature. So it always seemed to me like there was at BEST a 50/50 chance that this wouldn't be an issue and a 50/50 chance that this could wipe out the human race, which is a pretty big gamble to make. And once the process of the methane hydrates dissociating begins in earnest, it's a self-reinforcing feedback - the more methane that's released, the hotter it gets, which releases more methane, which makes things even hotter, which releases even more methane - am unstoppable chain reaction. This could begin at any time now. It could even have already begun in some areas and we just don't know about it yet because we don't have enough 'eyes' at the bottom of the oceans. One thing is for sure: the methane concentration in the atmosphere is rising, and the rate that it's rising is itself rising, and that's a sign of an escalating chain reaction...
