Summary of Hypothesis:
The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

Note: Florida is downwind of the dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico, which are surely pluming neurotoxic hydrogen sulfide now. That will result in brain damage as people breathe it, which will result in aberrant behavior. And just as with the original face-eater incident, which was also in coastal Florida and involved no 'bath salts', this man had stripped nude. This man wasn't terribly violent and he wasn't completely animalistic (he still remembered how to empty a vacuum cleaner, for example), so he'd probably sustained less brain damage than the face-eater had. Not everyone will be so lucky, and of course it won't just be people in Florida who inhale hydrogen sulfide, as this is a planetary problem...

Note: They just found methane in the ground near 19 homes in Santa Maria (California) near the coast as well, as mentioned in the 2013-01-18 update. Methane hydrate deposits are all along the coasts in the northern hemisphere, and it is probable that they extend under the ground. These deposits formed over a long period of time, then erosion washed soil on top of parts of the methane hydrate deposits, then plants and animals moved in on top of that soil, then WE moved in. Now that those deposits are melting, the methane is bubbling up through the soil and streams and rivers, etc. As these deposits melt away, this may cause land subsidence or sinkholes, as is happening in Louisiana at the expanding Bayou Corne sinkhole...
