2020-11-08 - Five things Joe Biden can do to fight climate change without the help of Congress:
http://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2020-11-08/five-things-joe-biden-can-do-to-fight-climate-change-without-congress-help

Note: Biden can do way more than that. Trump rolled back dozens and dozens of Obama regulations meant to protect the environment - cyanide use in traps on public lands, methane flaring, drilling in pristine forests, opening up huge areas in national parks to mining corporations, all kinds of horrible stuff. Trump did that by decree with executive orders. Biden could reverse ALL of Trump's changes the same way, possibly using one simple executive order that lists all of Trump's executive orders that he is rescinding. If Trump had done anything legislatively to harm the environment then it would take legislation to undo too, but the only real legislation Republicans passed during Trump's 4 years was the cash giveaway to big corporations and rich people.

Unfortunately, the damage Trump did during his one term has cost us all some time off our lifespans, and reversing what he's done won't restore that lost time to our lives. But with him gone, at least his foot will no longer be on the pedal in a mad dash to Graveyardland, so we'll all live a little longer than we would have had Trump won a second term. Trump's loss was a victory for people who want to stay alive longer and a loss for those who want to die sooner, simple as that...

Quote: "From the Gulf of Guinea to the mouth of the Senegal River, a sprawling shroud of seaweed is choking coastal ecosystems and the fishing communities that depend on them. Offshore, it snags lines, breaks nets and clogs up outboard motors. On shore, it accumulates in vast brown heaps, tide after tide, obstructing both boatmen and nesting sea turtles. As the seaweed rots, it releases foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide gas, causing respiratory illness in local populations. And in nearshore habitats, the same processes of decay depletes the oxygen in the water, killing marine animals in gruesome mass die-offs."

2020-11-12 - Earth will continue to warm no matter what we do, scientists say:

Quote: "Even if the nations of the world stopped all greenhouse gas emissions today, Earth will continue to warm, glaciers and ice caps will continue to melt and oceans will continue to rise for centuries according to a dire study published Thursday."

Quote: "Assuming human-caused emissions will reach their peak in the year 2030 and are eliminated completely by the year 2100, the model indicates we will still see an increase in global temperatures by 5.4 degrees Fahrenheit and seas that are 10 feet higher than today."

Quote: "The authors say if we want to avoid these scenarios, we need to remove about 33 gigatons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year starting immediately in addition to the complete elimination of manmade greenhouse gas emissions."

Quote: "If humankind hoped to prevent these negative effects, we would have had to eliminate human-caused greenhouse gas emissions between 1960 and 1970."

Note: That's what I've said for a while - that if we wanted to prevent our extinction, we would have begun at least 50 years ago. It's far too late now. The planetary-scale changes taking place now have gathered such momentum that the human race is incapable of stopping the transformation of Earth's climate to a hothouse state unsurvivable by human beings. Look at what they are suggesting we must do: immediately halt all greenhouse gas emissions AND remove 33 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year. Forget the latter part, just the immediate elimination of greenhouse gas emissions - that means shutting down every coal plant and mothballing every car, tractor, ship and plane immediately. Then what? Sit in the dark and starve to death while we try to figure out how to ALSO remove 33 gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year without vehicles or electricity? Riiiiiight. We can't solve this problem, period. What WILL solve this problem is the problem itself - we'll all die off and that will cut our greenhouse gas emissions to nothing. And then the Earth will slowly recover over a very long period of time and maybe eventually another intelligent species will arise...

The record-breaking delay comes after the average ice extent for October was the lowest in the satellite record, and means current ice coverage is roughly the same as it was during the height of the summer, when melting after the previous winter was well underway. The lack of ice means the Arctic sea ice extent is currently the lowest for this time of year, for at least a thousand years, scientists have said, though refreezing has now begun."

http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/west-coast-residents-struggle-psychological-burden-repeated-evacuations-wildfire-seasons-n1248451

Quote: "The year has seen record-breaking natural disasters, with storms that have battered the Atlantic and blazes that have scorched the West Coast. Scientists have tied the ever-worsening weather events to climate change, with warnings that the catastrophes will worsen without serious action to reduce the burning of coal, oil and gas."

Note: The catastrophes will worsen no matter what we do. There's a huge lag time before what we do shows up in the climate. The catastrophes we're seeing now are because of what we did decades ago, so the catastrophes will continue to worsen for at LEAST decades more into the future, even if we were to suddenly stop emitting any greenhouse gases. There's nothing we can do at this point to prevent the ongoing extinction event from wiping us off the face of the planet. At best we could slow things down somewhat, but we're not even making much of an effort to do that. Just as the people living at the end of the Roman Empire had no idea that they were living at the end of the Roman Empire, the people living on this planet right now have no idea that they're living at the end of human civilization. Earth's been providing plenty of clues, but apparently they haven't been forceful enough yet to jolt people out of their collective slumber. No need to worry about that though. Earth will get a WHOLE LOT more forceful with clues that this is the end as time goes on...

2020-11-26 - Unknown rotten egg odor, definitely not natural gas, blowing in from shore and sickening people in coastal Bootle (Britain):

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/mystery-vile-smell-borough-thats-19349152

Quote: "A gas company has responded to the 'vile' smell over Bootle that people say is making them sick. All week, people in the Sefton area have reported a putrid smell over the town that has left them concerned. A number of residents contacted the ECHO worried over a suspected gas leak that could have been causing it. But Cadent gas, the emergency gas service, has said there is no leak in the area. Dozens had taken to a local community Facebook group to discuss the smell over the last few days. One said: 'It's been on and off for days, it's vile. Apparently it is coming from the docks.'"

Note: A 100-ton pile of scrap metal recently went up in flames at the docks in Bootle too, mentioned in the 2020-11-21 update. Hydrogen sulfide will ignite if exposed to rusty iron, like that found in 100-ton piles of scrap metal, and it will also sicken people or - if the concentration is high enough - fry their brains and drive them insane and/or kill them. This story says the odor has been around all week, so the beginning of that timeframe is right around the time the scrap metal burst into flame at the docks...

2020-11-26 - Excess mortality data during the COVID-19 pandemic, updated each Friday:
http://ourworldindata.org/excess-mortality-covid

Note: There's some lag due to death reporting delays so the current surge that's overwhelming hospitals around the country isn't in the data yet. It'll be interesting to see if the excess deaths in the US in December (after Thanksgiving infections kick into gear) are on the same scale as the huge surge in excess deaths in the March-May timeframe, which is when they were forklifting pallets of corpses onto refrigerated semis and burying corpses in a mass grave on an island off NYC.

There've been lots of sad COVID-19 stories, but two stick out for me. One was a family that had a gathering in New Jersey and two weeks later six people all in the same family were dead. ONE funeral is hard to death with. Can you even imagine SIX all in the same period of time? The other story also involved a gathering, of 55 people. One or more infected people showed up, and the infections ultimately spread to 175 people, and seven of them died, and none of the seven who died had even attended the gathering - they just associated with someone who did. These kinds of stories have convinced me to keep my number of human contacts to a minimum - I'm in no great hurry to become a corpse being forklifted into a refrigerated semi. But that's just me!

http://www.accuweather.com/en/hurricane/tropical-cyclones-hitting-the-us-are-staying-stronger-after-making-landfall-new-research-shows/852118
http://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-03118-2

Quote: "A new study says hurricanes in the North Atlantic are staying stronger after making landfall, which suggests these storms could cause greater destruction in areas farther from the coast in the future."

Quote: "According to Nature, the study authors found 'a significant long-term shift towards slower decay,' which allows storms to maintain a higher intensity over land for a longer time period. This slower period of decay was said to align 'with a long-term regional mean sea surface temperature over the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean, which are adjacent to land and supply the moisture for the storms before landfall.'"

Note: So as the planet warms and particularly as the Gulf of Mexico and the western Caribbean warm, the hurricanes that strike the US will remain stronger after they hit land, causing increased damage farther from the coast. Time to add a few hundred billion dollars, at least, to the projected damages from hurricanes. Hey, nobody said destroying the habitability of our planet was gonna be cheap!
