Event Update For 2017-10-28

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Will America’s Prosperity Be Completely Wiped Out By Our Growing Debt?

The federal government is now 20.4 trillion dollars in debt, and most Americans don’t seem to care that the economic prosperity that we are enjoying today could be completely destroyed by our exploding national debt.  Over the past decade, the national debt has been growing at a rate of more than 100 million dollars an hour, and this is a debt that all of us owe.  When you break it down, each American citizen’s share of the debt is more than $60,000, and so if you have a family of five your share is more than $300,000.  And when you throw in more than 6 trillion dollars of corporate debt and nearly 13 trillion dollars of consumer debt, it is not inaccurate to say that we are facing a crisis of unprecedented magnitude. Are You Ready for Another Round of Mass Exterminations?
[by Ugo Bardi: The great “pulse” of mass exterminations that occurred during the 20th century (graph created by Rummel). According to this chart, 262 million people were exterminated during the last century, mainly by governments in a series of actions that Rummel defines as “democides”. The question is, could something similar occur in the future? It turns out that mass exterminations are like earthquakes, their occurrence cannot be predicted exactly; but we can estimate the probability of an event of a certain size to occur. And the more time passes, the more likely a new pulse of mass exterminations becomes. (more)]

  7. Winter has come: Temperatures plunge below zero as cold snap grips Britain

Temperatures plummeted to -5C (23F) in areas of Scotland and as low as -3C in southern England on Monday morning as a cold snap gripped Britain.

Autumn's first widespread grass frost spread across the country on Sunday night as thermometers broadly plunged to low single figures or below zero.

The coldest temperatures were clocked in Tulloch Bridge, in the Scottish Highlands, which hit -5C at 4am on Monday.

England's south coast saw temperatures of -3C (26.6F), while in northern England and Northern Ireland they fell to -2C (-28.4C.) Temperatures in London dropped to 1C. [more]

Globalization Is Competitive Debasement. Of Humanity.

As of this past week, Europe, China, and Japan have joined the U.S. in tightening liquidity. Which means DHL Risk - overnight delivery. Guaranteed...

Gamblers have been conned into believing that Trump is the beginning of the cycle, whereas he happens to be the end...

"It was all going so well. For me I mean, fuck everyone else"

The United States, and its vassal states across the Western world, have been engaged in a non-stop bid for competitive debasement for months, years, and decades. Slowly at first, now all at once.

At this latent stage of dementia-ridden corruption we are to believe that deleting political emails is extremely bad, but only because how then can they be hacked by the Russians and used to win elections? Likewise calling a subset of the electorate 'deplorable' one time is extremely bad, whereas castigating the entire world on a 24x7 basis is how you make America Great again. Sorry, not buying it. Unlike some people, I don't vote against my own interests for 35 years straight.

As we see above, the casino levitation trick was used to take people's minds off the fact that everything was getting worse in the background since the 2008 bailout. 2008 proved that Globalization failed. Who better to know that than the Chinese who had done yeoman's work shuttering 17 U.S. factories per day since WTO ascension, to bootstrap their way to the big table. Only to have it all collapse with extreme dislocation. Subsequent to 2008, the global "recovery" has consisted of tens of trillions of newly printed money to paper over abject economic failure. Instead of raising the Third World to developed world standards, quite the opposite has occurred. Now we need to raid healthcare and otherwise run the deficit at -5% of GDP to fund tax cuts for the obscenely wealthy. This is the dumbest and most corrupt fucking society ever.  [more]

  8. FBI is probing $300 million Puerto Rico power contract – Trump official claims, “I had absolutely nothing to do with Whitefish Energy receiving a contract in Puerto Rico”

The report comes after Puerto Rico's state-run electric utility said Sunday it had accepted the governor's request to immediately cancel its contract with Whitefish, a small Montana-based energy firm headquartered in Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's hometown.

During a Sunday press conference, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló called for PREPA to "immediately" cancel the deal, which was made in September, shortly after the hurricane hit the island.

At the time the storm hit, Whitefish reportedly had only two full-time employees. The deal drew scrutiny, with critics arguing the firm didn't have experience working on such a large-scale project and that its contract with PREPA was improper, pointing to a provision that sought to limit the government’s right to audit Whitefish.

The FBI is just the latest government body to probe the Whitefish deal. [more]

Sumatra region heats up as rainforests are razed for palm oil plantations – “The land use change does not only impact biodiversity and stored carbon, but also has a surface warming effect, adding to climate change”

Carbon dioxide in atmosphere hits highest level in 800,000 years, increases at record rate – “The laws of physics mean that we face a much hotter, more extreme climate”

Greenhouse gas concentrations surge to new record

Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere surged at a record-breaking speed in 2016 to the highest level in 800 000 years, according to the World Meteorological Organization's Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. The abrupt changes in the atmosphere witnessed in the past 70 years are without precedent.
Globally averaged concentrations of CO2 reached 403.3 parts per million in 2016, up from 400.00 ppm in 2015 because of a combination of human activities and a strong El Niño event. Concentrations of CO2 are now 145% of pre-industrial (before 1750) levels, according to the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin. [more]

Five years after Hurricane Sandy, is New York City better prepared?

Hurricane Sandy shoved the East River across the F.D.R. Drive onto the streets of Manhattan, reducing the ostensible hub of the universe to a blacked-out, waterlogged, immobile shambles. The extraordinary storm surge swamped Consolidated Edison’s power plant at 14th Street along its way to filling multiple ZIP codes with waist-deep brine, plunging Manhattan from Midtown south to the Financial District into darkness for days.

Transit systems were crippled, hospitals could not function and public-housing complexes had no working boilers or elevators.
Five years after Hurricane Sandy struck on 29 October 2012, much of the region’s inundated infrastructure has been repaired and some of it has been improved. But most of the big plans to stormproof New York City remain just that: plans. And throughout the planning, the city has continued to advance toward the water, with glass high-rises stretching across the riverfront in Queens, Brooklyn and the Far West Side of Manhattan. [more]

Oil majors planning for catastrophic 5°C global warming despite publicly backing Paris climate agreement – “Shell and BP want to have their oil and drink it too”

Oil giants Shell and BP are planning for global temperatures to rise as much as 5°C by the middle of the century. The level is more than double the upper limit committed to by most countries in the world under the Paris Climate Agreement, which both companies publicly support.

The discrepancy demonstrates that the companies are keeping shareholders in the dark about the risks posed to their businesses by climate change, according to two new reports [BP Plc; Royal Dutch Shell Plc] published by investment campaign group ShareAction. Many climate scientists say that a temperature rise of 5°C would be catastrophic for the planet.

ShareAction claims that the companies’ actions put the value of millions of people's pensions at risk. Two years after BP and Shell shareholders voted resoundingly in favour of forcing the companies to make detailed disclosures about climate risks, the companies have made unconvincing steps forward, according to the reports. 10. U.S. companies act on climate despite Trump – Carbon reduction targets “have been short in scope and pretty unambitious, but that is improving”

    [too late!]

Confessions of a climate change denier – “Distracting ourselves with impotent solutions might be more dangerous in the long run than the outright detachment from reality on the right”

Last week, Prof. Jon Schuldt, communication, spoke at a Cornell Amnesty International discussion about the perception of climate change in the American population. Effective communication, he explained to us, is key in raising awareness and bridging partisanship. “Doomsday” rhetoric does not help, he said, but only serves to limit action and discourage engagement. If he is right, this column will be of no help at all.
The coming decades will see a world of increasing crop failure, flooding, wildfires, infrastructure failures, droughts and exacerbated inequality. This much we’ve all heard before. Much less talked of is a colossal humanitarian crisis of displaced peoples, the so-called climate refugees. Dire though all this may be, few of us have trouble falling asleep, worried for our fellow humans, or terrified of horrific calamities to come. Climate change is slow, it happens quietly in the interim and, by God, does it make for boring television. This non-urgency itself is a deathly feature. It allows us to distract ourselves with less unpleasant solutions and fall into the same mental trap in which Aron Ralston [the guy who had to cut off his own arm which was trapped under a boulder] found himself. EPA to its scientists: go away or be quiet – Scott Pruitt is ousting the EPA’s independent science advisers and bringing in fossil-fuel industry insiders

Scott Pruitt, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, is taking unprecedented steps to push scientists out of his office.

Earlier this month, we learned via the Washington Post that Pruitt may soon be removing science advisers on advisory boards who have received grants from the EPA. “If we have individuals who are on those boards, sometimes receiving money from the agency … that to me causes questions on the independence and the veracity and the transparency of those recommendations that are coming our way,” he said at a Heritage Foundation meeting.

The move would be another step in Pruitt’s efforts to drastically whittle down EPA’s work as an environmental regulator, as Vox’s David Roberts outlined this summer. [more]
