Event Update For 2017-09-01

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

Note: The fact that they thought it was a gas leak means it was a rotten egg odor that they smelled and which sickened the people, but they didn't find anything. Hey, as long as they make sure never to carry H2S detectors then they'll never detect H2S. Problem solved! Well, except for the people who get sick or go insane from brain damage or fall over dead - it'll still be somewhat of a problem for them...

    Ongoing collapse in Christchurch, NZ

I remember saying on collapse.net that there would never be any meaningful recovery in Christchurch and was shot down for it. 7 years later I am being proved largely correct.

We have a middle-class friend who 7 years later is still living in an unliveable house without hot water, still waiting for a settlement with the insurance company.

Peter Temin says the world's’ largest economy has roads and bridges that look more like those in Thailand and Venezuela than those in parts of Europe.

In his new book, “The Vanishing Middle Class", reviewed by the Institute for New Economic Thinking, Mr Temin says the fracture of US society is leading the middle class to disappear. [more]

Wildfires surge amid scorching heat across US West
    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/wildfires-surge-amid-scorching-heat-across-us-west/ar-AAraspp

Ash rained down across Los Angeles Sunday from a destructive wildfire that the mayor said was the largest in city history — one of several blazes that sent thousands fleeing homes across the U.S. West during a blistering holiday weekend heat wave.

In Oregon about 140 hikers were awaiting rescue early Sunday after being forced to spend the night in the woods after fire broke out along the popular Columbia River Gorge trail. Search and rescue crews air-dropped supplies on Saturday as flames prevented the hikers' escape. Wildfires also entered a 2,700-year-old grove of giant sequoia trees near Yosemite National Park and have driven people from their homes in Montana and other areas struggling with a weeklong heat wave that has gripped the region.

In Washington state, Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed a state of emergency across all counties as three major fires closed recreation areas and prompted evacuations in a mountain town just southeast of Seattle. [more]

US: Another health occurrence on diplomats in Cuba last month
    https://www.sott.net/article/361008-US-Another-health-occurrence-on-diplomats-in-Cuba-last-month

The new U.S. disclosures came the same day that the union representing American diplomats said mild traumatic brain injury was among the diagnoses given to diplomats victimized in the attacks. In the most detailed account of the symptoms to date, the American Foreign Service Association said permanent hearing loss was another diagnosis, and that additional symptoms had included brain swelling, severe headaches, loss of balance and "cognitive disruption."

"We can confirm another incident which occurred last month and is now part of the investigation," Nauert said.

U.S. officials had previously said that the attacks, initially believed to be caused by a potential covert sonic device, had started in fall 2016 and continued until spring 2017. Last week, Nauert had said at least 16 Americans associated with the U.S. Embassy in Havana had been affected, but that the "incidents" were no longer occurring. [more]

Latest GFS has Irma coming ashore somewhere around the Carolinas at 885 mb about 8 days from now.

Hope GFS is wrong, but these models are getting better and better.
The price tag from Harvey could be over a hundred billion dollars. How much are we willing to pay for our fossil fuels, and why don’t the oil corporations have to pay a portion of these costs?

M5.3 earthquake followed by 51 aftershocks hit Idaho close to Yellowstone National Park

Idaho is rarely associated with earthquakes. But on September 2, 2017, a M5.3 earthquake hit near Soda Springs. The tremor was followed by at least 51 aftershocks, which were felt as far away as Salt Lake City, Utah, 200 miles away. [more]

  6. Yeah, Irma's looking kinda threatening at this point. Hope it misses everyone! I've seen scary storms run right up to the East Coast and then turn back out to sea without doing much of anything. On the other hand, sometimes bad sh#t happens. If I were anywhere in the path, I'd make sure I had at least some basic necessities, just in case the power goes out for a week or two. There's still time to calmly hit the stores. If Irma gets close then the stores will get picked over and people will start going into freak-out mode - best to stay ahead of that.
