The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

Note: So they were outdoors, near the East Coast, prior to this. Carbon monoxide ruled out. They want to blame food poisoning, but then ALL of the students would likely have sickened, not just 13 of them. But poison gas blowing by might very well only affect SOME of the students. Hydrogen sulfide is said to smell 'flowery' or 'sickly sweet' at medium-high concentrations, if you can smell it at all. Students might not think anything of smelling something like that at a cemetery with a lot of flowers around, which is where they were just prior to sickening. This doesn't sound all that different from the students who were playing basketball outside in Le Roy (New York) who suddenly came down with neurological damage (e.g. brain damage) that resulted in Tourette's-like muscle tics and twitches, except in this case the kids only got dizzy and had stomach pains. They may still have suffered some long-term kidney damage and/or brain damage though, and the brain damage may affect memory and the ability to concentrate and such, but those are subtle effects...
