Event Update For 2021-01-29

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

  1. Snowy Sunday Jonny, as we're expecting 10" - 15" of it this afternoon into Tuesday morning (they always forecast a ton, so we'll see what happens) here in western Chester Co., PA.

Helluva lotta residential fires on this day, jeez!

i think Caltrans will have to shut Rt. 1 down until further notice at this point, since it's not an easy fix. They may have to re-route the road from about a mile back on either side of the hole and move it inland by a quarter mile or more - BIG project no matter which way they go.

Aon plc (NYSE: AON), a leading global professional services firm providing a broad range of risk, retirement, and health solutions, today launches its global Weather, Climate & Catastrophe Insight: 2020 Annual Report. The report evaluates the impact of global natural disaster events to identify trends, manage volatility and enhance resilience.

The report reveals that the 416 natural catastrophe events of 2020 resulted in economic losses of USD268 billion – 8% above the average annual losses for this century – as costs continue to rise due to a changing climate, more people moving into hazard-prone areas and an increase in global wealth. Of this total, private sector and government-sponsored insurance programs covered USD97 billion, creating a protection gap of 64%, which is the portion of economic losses not covered by insurance. This highlights the importance of addressing the underserved by ensuring that there is increased access to affordable insurance products in the future. 2. Ship congestion has hit a record high at Southern California's main port
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/ship-congestion-hit-record-high-165948637.html

Around 38 container ships are waiting for berth space in Los Angeles and Long Beach, including ships that were directed to wait in defined areas or "drift boxes" at sea until anchorages are available, the Marine Exchange of Southern California said on Twitter on Thursday.

The Los Angeles port is expecting to handle 155,000 inbound containers next week, 80% more compared to a year earlier, according to Bloomberg. The vessels floating off the post have a capacity of 300,000 containers.

The challenge of ship congestion continues as cargo ships become bigger in size and take longer to unload, in addition to COVID-19 introducing workplace challenges on the waterfront, according to Bloomberg. [more]

Book excerpt: "How to Prepare for Climate Change" by David Pogue

The world is getting hotter, natural systems are going haywire, and you should begin to prepare. [already it's bullshit]

It's time to accept the new realities – of extreme weather, sure, but also what that weather will mean for our everyday lives: a lot of conflict, cost, and chaos.

In 2007, The New York Times interviewed John Holdren, Barack Obama's senior science advisor. What he said has become famous in climate circles:

"We basically have three choices: mitigation, adaptation, and suffering. We're going to do some of each. The question is what the mix is going to be." [there is no mitigation or adaptation according to Guy McPherson]

Mitigation means trying to stop climate change: Replace fossil fuels with clean power. Eat less beef. Fly less. Grow trees instead of clear-cutting them. Adopt smarter farming and industrial techniques. Drive less. Have fewer children. Adaptation means coping with climate change: Build seawalls. Raise houses. Move farmland to cooler regions. Plant heat-tolerant trees. Buy out homeowners in flood-prone areas. Suffering. Well, you'll be reading plenty about that. Biden environmental challenge: Filling vacant scientist jobs
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/biden-environmental-challenge-filling-vacant-155704102.html

Polluting factories go uninspected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Leadership positions sit vacant at the U.S. Geological Survey's climate science centers. And U.S. Department of Agriculture research into environmental issues important to farmers is unfinished.

The ranks of scientists who carry out environmental research, enforcement and other jobs fell in several agencies — sharply in some — under former President Donald Trump, federal data shows. Veteran staffers say many retired, quit or moved to other agencies amid pressure from an administration they regarded as hostile to science and beholden to industry. [THAT'S what has to change]

That poses a challenge for President Joe Biden, who must rebuild a depleted and demoralized work force to make good on promises to tackle climate change, protect the environment and reduce pollution that disproportionately affects poor and minority communities.

“It’s going to take a long time to undo the damage that the Trump administration has done,” said Kyla Bennett, a former EPA enforcement official who now directs science policy for Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, a watchdog group. Bennett said many scientists left as Trump's administration rolled back regulations and undercut climate work, leaving agencies with less experience, a work backlog and unfinished research.

Employment data shows more than 670 science jobs lost at the EPA, 150 at the U.S. Geological Survey, which researches human-caused climate change and natural hazards, and 231 at the Fish and Wildlife Service.

At the USDA, more than one-third of staff members — almost 200 people — left the agency's Economic Research Service and its National Institute of Food and Agriculture in Fiscal Year 2019, after the Trump administration moved their jobs from Washington, D.C., to Kansas City. https://www.sott.net/article/447999-String-of-lights-seen-in-sky-near-Charlotte-sparks-UFO-debate-What-was-it

Multiple people have reported seeing an odd string of lights at night near Charlotte, igniting talk of UFOs on social media.

"Anyone know what these lights were tonight?" Alisa Homewood asked on the "What's Up Indian Trail?" community Facebook page. "No sound at all. They flickered like lanterns, but followed the same exact path up until they disappeared which was odd."

Homewood told the Charlotte Observer the lights "resembled how a flame would look, flickering in the dark."

"My initial thought when I saw the lights was it was the helicopters in the distance, but as the lights got closer there was no sound. Then they went straight up into the sky and disappeared. No smoke, no debris," she said.

"The blue light I didn't notice until after I took the pictures. In the sky it did not look blue, it looked like a group of bright lights," she said. "I thought it was odd though, that a few people have seen and photographed that same blue-ish grouping of lights."

Since Homewood shared her photos, others living along the East Coast have reported seeing similar lights at night and they have begun sharing their photos social media. [more; sighting in NC]

Judge blocks Trump rule to limit health studies in EPA regs
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/judge-blocks-trump-rule-limit-192151816.html

A federal judge has blocked a last-minute rule issued by the Trump administration to limit what evidence the Environmental Protection Agency may consider as it regulates pollutants to protect public health.

Former EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the Jan. 6 rule was aimed at ending what he and other Republicans call “secret science.″ Some industry and conservative groups had long pushed for the change, saying public health studies that hold confidential and potentially identifying data about test subjects should be made public so the underlying data can be scrutinized before the EPA issues rules aimed at protecting public health.

Wheeler called the rule an attempt to boost transparency about government decision-making, but critics said it was hastily imposed and would threaten patient confidentiality and the privacy of individuals in public health studies that underlie federal regulations. Rural voters have turned their backs on the Democratic party - a Wisconsin political organizer describes which progressive economic policies can win them back
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/rural-voters-turned-backs-democratic-152857382.html

Democrats need to fight for small businesses and independent farms and against corporate monopolies if they want to win back support in rural areas.

And those farmers "really understand how economic power works, how the companies that they buy their fertilizer and seed from have pretty much monopolized that sector. Or they can't get the best price for their grain because there's only one or two buyers in the area," Hogseth said.

It's not that they don't understand the monopolies are sucking the life out of their land and their livelihoods - it's that they understand exactly how powerful the corporate monopolies are, and they don't believe Democrats will fight them on their behalf.

Rural voters care about action, and taking a stand, and living up to your words. Unless Democrats are willing to demonstrate that they're fighting for small businesses and independent farms, and against job-killing market consolidation and corporate monopolies, they'll never win back the rural areas that used to be steadfast Democratic strongholds. 8. Japan whale hunting: 'By-catch' rule highlighted after minke death
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/japan-whale-hunting-catch-rule-002032890.html

A video showing the final, brutal 20 minutes of a minke whale's life at the hands of Japanese fishermen sent a ripple of shock through international media.

But activists says the footage of the whale being slowly drowned, after becoming trapped in their nets, has merely highlighted an entirely legal loophole which is used to kill dozens of whales each year.

"This is neither an exceptional nor unexpected occurrence," Mark Simmonds, senior marine scientist at Humane Society International (HSI), said in a release after the whale's death.

"But what is exceptional is that this whole process was witnessed and filmed for the world to see."

Indeed, the young mammal's death once again has exposed the gaping chasm between Japan and the wider world when it comes to whale hunting: activists see a cruel and avoidable death, but the fishermen see a gift from the sea. [more; the gift will be when they're all gone]
