Note: Sounds good, but then we're back to the question of what are we going to do about it? If we stop polluting then global dimming fades and we die quicker without that dimming. If we don't stop polluting then we die, but a little slower as long as we pollute enough to keep global dimming going. The end game - Earth cycling into its anoxic state and becoming uninhabitable - is the same no matter what we do or don't do. The underlying assumption of the Green New Deal is that this problem has an attainable solution. Not all problems have attainable solutions. Like it or not, this is one of those problems. That's just the reality of our situation. In short, buckle up, because this ride's going to get a whole lot rougher!

Quote: "Witness account of the Ethiopian airlines that crashed Sunday killing 157 people on board says the plane came down in flames before it exploded after hitting the ground. It has also been reported that the pilot made a distress call and had been cleared to return at Bole International airport."

Quote: "The Ethiopian plane was new, delivered to the airline in November. The Boeing 737 Max 8 was one of 30 meant for the airline, Boeing said in July. The jet’s last maintenance was on Feb. 4, and it had flown just 1,200 hours. The plane crashed six minutes after departure, plowing into the ground at Hejere near Bishoftu, or Debre Zeit, some 31 miles outside Addis Ababa, at 8:44 a.m. There was no immediate indication why the plane went down in clear weather while on a flight to Nairobi, the capital of neighboring Kenya."

Unlike mature trees, seedlings’ roots are too shallow to reach water deeper underground. Climate scientists have warned for years of the possibility of such abrupt responses to higher temperatures, such as the rapidly-accelerating loss of ice sheets. 'These dramatic disturbance events, the changes we will see over the landscape won’t be gradual over decades, they will happen very quickly,' says Dobrowski."

That's why the permafrost is melting and not even refreezing in the winter, that's why Greenland is losing a billion tons of ice PER DAY, and that's why methane explosions are leaving gigantic craters in the ground in Siberia. Forget all of that 'by some distant date in the future' BS. We're watching things happen in realtime right in front of our eyes that supposedly won't be a problem for decades. I've begun to suspect that all of that 'by the end of the century' and 'by the middle of the century' stuff is a kind of placating brainwashing, and not all that subtle either. The situation is dire, already, right now, and it is rapidly becoming ever more dire. Of course, anyone who wants to wait until they're falling over dead or burning to death to realize how dire things already are is completely free to do so!

Quote: "A towering wind turbine went up in flames Friday at a wind farm located at the edge of a southern Nova Scotia community. The West Pubnico fire department responded just after 5 p.m. to monitor the rotating blades and make sure flaming debris did not start additional fires on the ground."

Quote: "The tower, which he estimated at over 90 metres tall, was 'all aflame.' 'It was something we'd never seen, for sure. And we couldn't get near it,' he said. Firefighters were unable to get close enough to put the fire out directly because of the turbine's height and movement of the blades -- and it couldn't be turned off with the gearbox on fire."

2019-03-16 - Climate strike by kids a source of hope, but new research shows it may be too late:
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/climate-strike-protests-arctic-melting-a8825936.html

Quote: "The end of the world is no longer a fanciful hypothesis. It is the most plausible scenario. In the last week, the UN Environment assembly announced its finding that, even if the Paris Agreement targets were met, global temperatures would rise by three to five degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels."

Note: It IS too late. It was too late in 2002 when sea life began fleeing the depths off the Pacific Northwest. It was probably too late when 'dead zones' began spreading across the oceans and the phytoplankton started dying off, in the 1970s. It is most definitely WAY too late now. And again, people edge closer to what I've been saying all along, despite the fact that they don't even really understand the scope of the various problems we face. In particular, they're not paying any attention to the mysterious 'rotten egg' odor events that have been spreading across the planet or the rising number and intensity of fires that have begun destroying the surface of the planet. The kids who went on strike may believe consciously that there's yet time to 'fix the problem' if we'd just 'do something', but subconsciously they may already know - or at least suspect - that we're at the end of the world now and there's no stopping it...

2019-03-16 - The rapid decline of the natural world is a crisis even bigger than climate change:
http://www.fasterthanexpected.com/2019/03/15/the-rapid-decline-of-the-natural-world-is-a-crisis-even-bigger-than-climate-change/
http://www.ipbes.net/sites/default/files/downloads/ipbes_global_assessment_primer_english.pdf

Note: The rapid decline of the natural world is also related to climate change. The dying off of insects around the world should strike fear into the hearts of any thinking persons, seeing as insects dying off hard on a planetary scale is something only seen in the most severe of extinction events. The current extinction event is a repeat of the Permian-Triassic extinction event, the most severe of all extinction events, and insects did take some serious hits then, just as they are now...

Note: As if the situation wasn't bad enough, Trump is working overtime to help corporations kill us all off as quickly as possible. I can see it now: corpses everywhere, everybody dead, but somewhere in a disintegrating home a TV will be running on solar power, and a guy on the TV on a prerecorded loop will be telling a MAGA-hat-wearing corpse being eaten by maggots in a recliner that hey, the stock market just hit a record high!

2019-03-17 - Oceans absorbing 4 times as much CO2 since 1994 compared to 1800-1994:
http://desdemonadespair.net/2019/03/oceans-absorbed-34-billion-tons-of-carbon-from-fossil-fuel-burning-over-1994-2007-period-a-four-fold-increase-over-1800-1994.html
http://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6432/1193

Quote: "The global ocean absorbed 34 billion metric tons of carbon from the burning of fossil fuels from 1994 to 2007 — a four-fold increase to 2.6 billion metric tons per year when compared to the period starting from the Industrial Revolution in 1800 to 1994."

Note: It's either worse than that now, since 2007, or the oceans have begun to get saturated. If the oceans haven't become saturated yet then it's just a matter of time until they do. Once that happens, all of the CO2 will go straight into the atmosphere and planetary temps will start spiking quickly, monumentally accelerating any number of other feedbacks already in play. And as the oceans become saturated, they are becoming more acidic too, which is causing havoc for ocean life, which is all by itself a dire problem...

2019-03-31 - Hydrogen sulfide continues regularly blowing through coastal Kearny (New Jersey):
http://dailyvoice.com/new-jersey/teaneck/news/rotten-egg-smell-continues-to-plague-kearny-residents/750269/

Quote: "Residents in Kearny have complained for months about a strong, unpleasant smell occasionally wafting through the town, with the aroma more powerful on some days than others. Saturday and Sunday seemed to be especially bad. Over the weekend Kearny residents described a smell like rotten eggs that was so potent, it forced people to close their windows. One man said he noticed it in the morning when he left town Saturday, and still detected it when he returned that night. A woman said her dogs were sickened by the stench. In a word, the smell is 'toxic,' yet another woman said. Residents and the town's longtime mayor, Al Santos, blame the persistent aroma on a gas, hydrogen sulfide, emanating from a 100-acre landfill maintained by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority."

Quote: "The NJSEA has said that it is trying to determine the source of the smell, but has not concluded that the Keegan site is to blame."

Note: Whatever the source, they're breathing poison gas, which is obviously not good for one's health...
