Hydrogen sulfide is water-soluble and neurotoxic and can kill you with a delayed reaction of minutes, hours or even days. You can easily test water - just jump in. If you don't die then it's safe. Note: Cliff-diving into...water. Lotta people diving into water and not resurfacing these days. Think about that. When you jump in water, you take a breath first, so your lungs are filled with air, which makes your body buoyant. And yet people are jumping into water and not resurfacing. The only way that can happen is if they exhale the air from their lungs immediately after diving into water, and the only reasons for that are 1) they're unconscious; 2) they're dead; or 3) they purposely expel all the air from their lungs because they're trying to commit suicide by drowning. In the vast majority of these cases, you can eliminate option 3 as a possibility. So that leaves instantaneous or near-instantaneous unconsciousness or death as the only possibilities. Hydrogen sulfide is water-soluble, it is a heavier-than-air gas that accumulates wherever water does, it is created by anaerobic digestion of biomatter at the bottom of bodies of water, and it is called a 'knockdown agent' because it can cause immediate unconsciousness or death. The only way you're going to know if water is safe is by jumping in. If you don't die then it was safe...

Note: Whatever killed these men and sickened the others, it was highly lethal, it was a gas (else the guys walking in wouldn't have sickened too), and it was fast-acting, e.g. a 'knockdown agent'. Hydrogen sulfide fits all of those criteria. Not many things do. The first thing I'd check would be the sewer trap in that home because a malfunctioning sewer trap can allow hydrogen sulfide from the local sewer system to infiltrate a home, as with the woman who was gassed to death by hydrogen sulfide in her home in Kansas City, mentioned in the 2013-07-04 update.

If the sewer trap is working properly then it could simply have been an invisible blob of gas that blew by in the atmosphere and got sucked in via the HVAC system or got blown in through an open window or door. Running an AC unit or keeping any windows or doors open these days can be fatal. Of course, dying of heat stroke is fatal too, so this is quite a problem...
