Event Update For 2013-05-30

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2013-05-30 - Missing boater, 40, washes ashore dead tethered to his boat, in Cuba:
http://www.abc-7.com/story/22469427/missing-boater-rydberg-fort-myers-key-west-dead-cuba

Quote: "The Coast Guard received a distress radio beacon from Rydberg's boat around 4 a.m. on May 14th, 30 miles north of Key West. They launched a crew but weren't able to find Rydberg or his boat. They called off the search four days later."

Note: The wee hours are when the atmosphere cools and contracts, which will push any hydrogen sulfide or methane floating in the atmosphere above closer to the ground, making explosions, fires and hydrogen sulfide poisoning events more common during those hours. I mentioned this man when he went missing, in the 2013-05-22 update. Lots of fishermen have gone missing similarly, though usually they find their empty 'ghost boat' first then the corpse(s) later. This story here sorta reminds me of 'Dracula', where the ship washed ashore with the captain tied to the wheel...

Quote: "Sources close to the investigation say Julia Papazian Law had been foaming at the mouth and likely suffered an episode that caused her drowning. No drugs or alcohol were found at the scene."

Note: Mentioned this story in the 2013-05-25 update, when they first found this young woman dead in the bathtub. Hydrogen sulfide poisoning can cause seizures and foaming at the mouth. It's also water-soluble and I'm pretty sure it's contaminating municipal water supplies here and there now (as well as the water in lakes, creeks, ponds, rivers, etc). But she may also have had a window open and simply gotten a whiff the old-fashioned way too...

Note: Ummm, really? Someone makes batteries that when overheated emit deadly hydrogen sulfide gas? What kind of batteries are these, that emit hydrogen sulfide when they overheat? Cuz I don't ever want to buy any of this type, for any reason. And that's just brilliant, putting batteries that might emit deadly poison gas in an emergency call center, or anywhere for that matter...

I did not know that under certain conditions batteries will emit H2S.

    found this at Wiki:

"When a lead-acid battery is discharged, the electrolyte (sulfuric acid) and the active material on the plates of the battery (lead) are consumed to produce water and lead sulfate and current flow. The chemical equation for a lead-acid battery during discharge is: PbO2 Pb 2H2SO4 -->PbSO4 2H2O +Electrical energy. The chemical equation for a lead-acid battery during charge is the reverse with lead, sulfuric acid, and heat being yielded as well as some Hydrogen gas. Ideally, all of the lead sulfate is recombined with the hydrogen from the water to replenish the sulfuric acid. When a lead-acid battery is charged, electrical energy is added to the battery, causing the water and lead sulfate to be recombined to produce electrolyte and the active plate material. During normal charging, hydrogen gas is given off, however if internal damage to the plates or low electrolyte levels exist, internal gassing may create hydrogen sulfide gas. In sealed batteries this would normally not vent to the outside."

    1. Wow, thanks! Kinda scared of lead-acid batteries now, but I see it doesn't normally vent to the outside. I wonder what happened to their batteries that it did. I guess that's up to them to figure out, unless they want it to happen again, possibly with a worse outcome.

    2. Hmm, I wonder if fire could make them vent H2S. I bet it could.

    3. So when the batteries explode they release H2S which makes the explosion & fire even more intense & faster spreading which is most likely the reason that many people don't have the chance to make it out alive. What a horrifying way to go.

    4. Yeah, you just put into words what I was thinking there. And with these batteries, if they're connected, then you've got the electrified copper to help get the fire going in the first place, then they rupture or explode and add yet more explosively flammable and deadly H2S to the equation. So these lead-acid batteries are kinda like deathbombs quietly waiting to go off.
