This is a DIRE situation - they're about to get 7 straight days of rain from the Pineapple Express. The dam is 900 feet deep and is at 101% of capacity with a deteriorated southern emergency spillway (that hadn't been used since the dam was built in 1968) capable of collapsing the dam. In the left formula, the system is a function of the astronomical, geophysical and internal dynamics of the planet (and our local solar neighbors); in the one on the right, we're looking at the same Earth system as a function of Industrialized Societies (ie. humanity), as all of those factors tend to zero - because we have MUCH more of an effect than those other factors].
Can the Anthropocene equation be solved?
“Well, probably not. Human societies are too complex. What we can say is that the rate of change needs to become zero soon. It is difficult to imagine a global civilization functioning on a destabilizing Earth system,” Will Steffen says.

“We need to take a biosphere positive approach to economic development in the Anthropocene. We need development that stores carbon not emits it, enhances biodiversity not reduces it and purifies waters and soils not pollutes them.” [more]

[heh (little late for that, there Skippy,) the author then goes into the usual hopium - ya know, the old 'humanity can transform rapidly' canard]

Scientists devise desperate plan to refreeze the Arctic before sea ice melts completely
http://www.desdemonadespair.net/2017/02/scientists-devise-desperate-plan-to.html

[HOO-WEEEE! I hope their remedy of dropping bags of rocks into the hole works, but honestly, that sounds like something of a desperation measure to me. But then again, the situation DOES actually look pretty desperate. I was thinking that dam in Iraq would be the first big dam to fail, but, well, I guess we'll see what happens!Jonny Mnemonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06516458612879773986noreply@blogger.com
