Two of the largest, the Beachie Creek and Lionshead Fires, started from lightning on August 16.

The fires in Oregon were all heavily influenced by a historic extreme wind event on Monday, September 7 that brought 25 to 50 mph winds to many areas. Power lines and trees were toppled and any existing fires or just a spark could escalate into a raging fire quickly. Four fires east of Interstate 5 from Portland south to Eugene are each now larger than 100,000 acres. Just one 100,000-acre fire in Oregon is rare, but to have four at once is unprecedented in recent decades.

Wildfires have burned over 800 square miles in Oregon
https://wildfiretoday.com/2020/09/10/wildfires-have-burned-over-800-square-miles-in-oregon/

At least 50 fires have burned over 800 square miles in Oregon, and again on Wednesday, dry, breezy weather kept them growing. Governor Kate Brown said that during this fire siege the state will likely experience the greatest loss of property and lives from wildfires in its history. This a result of the confluence of several factors, including drought and lightning, along with hot, dry, and very windy weather. When we eventually have a safe, effective vaccine, this skepticism could become a huge problem.

The big picture: 62% of adults say they're worried the Food and Drug Administration will rush to approve a vaccine under pressure from the Trump administration. Few see the implications, the underlying factors or the irreversible nature of these profound events. As you will see below, more than half of all households in some of our largest cities “are facing serious financial problems”, and Americans continue to file for unemployment benefits at a rate that the United States had never seen before prior to 2020. When 695,000 workers filed for unemployment benefits during a single week in 1982, it established a record which stood for nearly 38 years. But now we have been way above that old record for 25 weeks in a row. On Thursday, we learned that another 884,000 Americans filed new claims for unemployment benefits last week… [more; ah, but the U-3 rate!]

'We're not who we think we are': NYT admits Americans' quality of life dropping, US plunges to 28th on new global index
https://www.sott.net/article/441202-We-re-not-who-we-think-we-are-NYT-admits-Americans-quality-of-life-dropping-US-plunges-to-28th-on-new-global-index

The US' world-leading self-image is totally unjustified, the Times acknowledged on Thursday, contrasting Washington's vaunted superpower status with its 28th-place ranking in this year's Social Progress Index (SPI), set to be released today. The index purports to measure quality of life based on metrics like health, education, safety, freedom, and environmental stewardship.

The US has slipped nine places since the 2011 launch of the index, which boasts a proprietary scientific formula that incorporates 50 "metrics of well-being" and claims to be "inspired by Nobel-winning economists." Its advisory board is chaired by a Harvard Business School professor, Michael Porter, who lamented to the Times that "It's like we're a developing country."

"We are no longer the country we like to think we are," he moaned, urging readers to take the bad news as "a call to action."
