Event Update For 2021-01-28

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

2021-01-28 - Puzzling lack of thiamine is disrupting marine ecosystems and killing off life:
http://www.hakaimagazine.com/features/the-oceans-mysterious-vitamin-deficiency/

Quote: "California researchers now investigating the source of the salmon’s nutritional problems find themselves contributing to an international effort to understand thiamine deficiency, a disorder that seems to be on the rise in marine ecosystems across much of the planet. It’s causing illness and death in birds, fish, invertebrates, and possibly mammals, leading scientists from Seattle to Scandinavia to suspect some unexplained process is compromising the foundation of the Earth’s food web by depleting ecosystems of this critical nutrient."

Quote: "Thiamine originates in the lowest levels of the food web, where particular species of bacteria, phytoplankton, fungi, and plants synthesize the compound de novo—meaning from anew—by assembling and linking existing compounds into vitamin B1, which naturally occurs in multiple forms. Thiamine then passes through the food chain and eventually finds its way into every animal and plant on Earth. No organism can live without it. In animals, thiamine interacts with several enzymes and helps generate energy within cells, making possible the most basic of metabolic processes. Without enough thiamine, cellular-level functioning begins to fail. Affected animals behave abnormally, suffer neurological and reproductive disorders, and can eventually die."

Quote: "Sergio SaƱudo-Wilhelmy, a University of Southern California biogeochemist, says warming ocean water could be affecting the populations of microorganisms that produce thiamine and other vitamins, potentially upsetting basic chemical balances that marine ecosystems depend on. 'In different temperatures, different phytoplankton and bacteria grow faster,' he says. This, he explains, could hypothetically allow microorganisms that do not produce thiamine—but, instead, acquire it through their diet—to outcompete the thiamine producers, effectively reducing thiamine concentrations in the food web."

Note: Didn't see that one coming - climate change leading to widespread and possibly planetary-scale vitamin B1 deficiency. This does probably have something to do with bacteria. A lot of major changes are now occurring on Earth that are related to bacteria. Some bacteria do better when things warm up, like the ancient bacteria and archaea that produce hydrogen sulfide, and flesh-eating bacteria, and the bacteria that comprise hydrogen-sulfide-spewing sargassum seaweed, and some undoubtedly don't fare as well, possibly including the thiamin-producers at the very base of the food web. We could see massive die-off of all different kinds of life from vitamin B1 deficiency alone as time goes on and the problem spreads throughout the food web...

2021-01-28 - What writers who imagined drowned worlds tell us about the future of sea-level rise:

http://theconversation.com/sea-level-rise-writers-imagined-drowned-worlds-for-centuries-what-they-tell-us-about-the-future-151804

Quote: "Water was traded on Wall Street alongside oil and gold for the first time in early December 2020. That might seem bizarre, but there is a grim logic at play. Reliable sources of water that have nourished civilisations throughout history—the glaciers and ice packs that release a steady flow each spring—are shrinking. New research has revealed that the world is losing ice 65% faster now than it did in the 1990s, at a rate of 1.3 trillion tons a year."

Mars is wiggling and wobbling as it spins, and astronomers have no idea why
    https://strangesounds.org/2021/01/mars-wobble-mystery-rotation.html

Why is Mars not rotating on a straight axis? The Red Planet is wiggling and wobbling as it spins, and astronomers have no idea why.

Like a toy top that teeters as it loses speed, the poles of Mars are wandering ever-so-slightly away from the planet’s axis of rotation, moving about 4 inches (10 centimeters) off-center every 200 days or so.

That makes Mars only the second known planet in the universe to exhibit this phenomenon with Earth being the first. [more; preview to ending up a dead planet like Mars? Brown Dwarf affect? Jonny?]

  2. BLM nominated for new Nobel 'Mostly Peaceful' Prize
    https://www.sott.net/article/447962-BLM-nominated-for-new-Nobel-Mostly-Peaceful-Prize [The Babylon Bee]

The Nobel Committee has announced they have nominated Black Lives Matter for the brand new Nobel "Mostly Peaceful" Prize for its hard work bringing attention to racism by burning down cities around the world.

"No one has done more to contribute to the cause of 'mostly peace' than Black Lives Matter," said Norwegian MP Petter Eide. "They brought attention to racism, and they did it while mostly not being criminal terrorists!" MP Eide then demanded the interviewer raise his fist while shouting "Black Lives Matter" before knocking him over with a brick.

Experts are in universal agreement that this BLM is highly deserving of this new Nobel Prize category.

BLM thanked the committee for the honor and then condemned them for not doing nearly enough. They then marched on Stockholm and burned the city to the ground in a fiery but mostly peaceful demonstration.

Western storm moving east with heavy snow from Chicago to New York
    https://www.yahoo.com/gma/western-storm-moving-east-heavy-105120458.html

The western storm finally left the West and is moving into the Midwest Saturday and into the Northeast Sunday night into Monday.

More than 15 inches of snow fell in parts of coastal California and up to 107 inches of snow fell in the Sierra Nevada mountains. That's 9 feet of snow, in just a few days.

Heavy rain caused mudslides that buried homes, closed roads and prompted evacuations. In the mountains, several interstates had to be shut down for a time due to the heavy snow.

As the storm moves east, 21 states -- from the Dakotas to North Carolina -- are on alert for heavy snow and a lingering Arctic blast.

A winter storm watch has been issued for Washington, D.C., for Sunday and Philadelphia and New York City for Monday. [more]
GM just sped up the depreciation of everything it owns
    https://qz.com/1966116/electric-cars-will-speed-up-depreciation-of-everything-gm-owns

Companies facing massive technology shifts have two choices—bet the company on the next era, or collect cash in a shrinking industry before hanging up your spurs. Plenty of companies fail to make the leap: Kodak in digital photography, Blackberry in smartphones, and almost every newspaper company on the internet, to name a few.

GM is going to try. On Thursday, Detroit’s biggest automaker said it plans to exclusively offer electric light-duty cars and trucks by 2035, five years ahead of a previously announced goal and part of a broader mission to make its production and operations carbon neutral by 2040. That timeline puts GM well ahead of market forecasts: Less than half of the US vehicle market is expected to be electric by 2035. [more; it won't matter we'll all be gone]

Biden's Biggest Climate Move: Signaling that Fossil Fuels Are Not the Future
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/bidens-biggest-climate-move-signaling-174945444.html

As the reality of climate change has grown increasingly urgent over the past several decades, the business leaders, politicians and government officials aware of the threat have largely played a game of wait and see, avoiding the financial costs and political pitfalls of being the first movers on the issue.

On Wednesday, a day dubbed “Climate Day” by the Biden Administration, the President sought to end the federal government’s waffling with a flurry of directives that went further than any previous administration. The move was no surprise — Biden had proposed those measures on the campaign trail and repeatedly promised to follow through on them — but nonetheless it sent the strongest market signal yet that the U.S. will undergo the difficult task of revitalizing its weakened economy with climate change in mind, a reality that will reshape how communities across the U.S. think about energy, how global companies do business and how developing countries plan their development. Musk's SpaceX violated its launch license in explosive Starship test: the Verge
    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/musks-spacex-violated-launch-license-040954251.html

SpaceX's first high-altitude test flight of its Starship rocket, which exploded last month while attempting to land after an otherwise successful test launch, violated the terms of its Federal Aviation Administration test license, the Verge reported on Friday, citing sources.

An investigation was opened that week focusing on the explosive landing and on SpaceX's refusal to stick to the terms of what the FAA authorized, the Verge said.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Starship rocket destroyed in the accident was a 16-storey-tall prototype for the heavy-lift launch vehicle being developed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk's private space company to carry humans and 100 tons of cargo on future missions to the moon and Mars. [more; never gonna happen]

Arctic seals experiencing dramatic weight loss as temperatures rise
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/arctic-seals-experiencing-dramatic-weight-032215639.html

The Arctic has seen rapid transformation in recent years as a result of climate change, with rising temperatures and significant fluctuations in sea ice thickness. Those changes could be causing three species of Arctic seals to lose body mass at alarming rates, according to a new study.

The researchers found that the seals' body condition declined in almost all age and sex classes in every studied species. Only two groups, spotted seal subadults and adults, did not experience a decline in body condition.

U.S. Oil Pushes ‘Clean Shale’ as Biden Mounts Climate Attack
    https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/u-oil-pushes-clean-shale-110000293.html

American oil executives began a pushback against some of President Joe Biden’s climate policies by making the case that fossil fuels from U.S. shale have a lower carbon footprint than imports.

[what a crock of shit! they aren't counting the CH4 being released]

Since taking office this month, the Biden administration has made swift moves to pause sales of oil and gas leases on federal land, cancel the Keystone XL pipeline and expand the government’s fleet of clean-energy vehicles. The U.S. oil industry, already under pressure from low prices and investor pessimism, is particularly concerned about limiting access to resources on federal acreage in New Mexico, Wyoming, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.
