[heh, just like the ol' banker mortgage problems!]

The National Collegiate Student Loan Trusts holds 800,000 private student loans through 15 different trusts, which collectively own approximately $12 billion of student loan debt, according to the New York Times.

Of that amount, about 160,000 private student loans are in default. These student loans were originally issued by banks, and then subsequently sold through securitization to investors, including the National Collegiate Student Loan Trusts. Ownership records may have been lost in the process.

The New York Times reports that given the incomplete ownership records, it is not exactly clear who owns the individual student loans. If true, this could pose a major problem for National Collegiate, which is seeking to collect unpaid student loan debt from borrowers who have defaulted.

While these lawsuits involve borrowers who have defaulted on their student loans, the student loan crisis continues to grow.
More than 44 million student loan borrowers collectively owe more than $1.4 trillion in student loans, according to the most recent student loan debt report from personal finance site Make Lemonade.

Student loan debt is now the second highest consumer debt category - second only to mortgages.

According to Make Lemonade, about 11% of students default on their student loans each year.[more]

Magnitude 7.8 quake between Russia and Alaska to cause tsunami waves: Pacific Tsunami Warning Center
https://www.cnbc.com/2017/07/17/quake-between-russia-and-alaska-to-cause-tsunami-waves-authorities-say.html

Needles everywhere: Drug crisis creates pollution threat
https://www.yahoo.com/news/needles-everywhere-drug-crisis-creates-slideshow-wp-182703720.html

[cue Brian Eno/David Byrne instrumental: Mountain of Needles]

[Why is it that people want to punch so many politicians in the face? Obama mandated that outdoor municipal water supplies have a covering erected over them and that they be equipped with some kind of laser-based purification system. So at least some effort is being made to protect those sources of water. That doesn't mean they're safe, just safeR. I guess it's a gamble now when you put water on your head, no matter the source. Well, I guess that gigantic iceberg is probably a pretty safe not-yet-contaminated source of water, assuming there aren't any dangerous ancient microbes in it, which there might be.Jonny Mnemonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06516458612879773986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388504906915444063.post-17534181905895173912017-07-18T06:53:36.559-05:002017-07-18T06:53:36.559-05:00Shallow 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits off Russia&#...Shallow 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula
https://www.sott.net/article/356641-Shallow-7-7-magnitude-earthquake-hits-off-Russias-Kamchatka-Peninsula

Tuesday, 18 July 2017
Heat wave headed for Britain

Severe Thunderstorms Tuesday into Wednesday followed by potentially record breaking 40c heatwave late July!
http://robinwestenra.blogspot.com/2017/07/heat-wave-headed-for-britain.html

A crack on the Greenland's largest glacier

NASA has captured new mysterious crack on the Greenland's largest glacier
http://robinwestenra.blogspot.com/2017/07/a-crack-on-greenlands-largest-glacier.html

The first photographs of a new and ominous crack in Greenland’s enormous Petermann Glacier were captured by a NASA airborne mission Friday.

The crack appeared in the middle of the floating shelf, rather than on one of its sides, as is typical of this glacier — leading Lhermitte to wonder whether it could have been caused by the ocean waters below the shelf.
