They're as good at it as they are because they've evolved alongside us for thousands of years, but still, it's not their ideal diet. Here's the case for dogs being carnivores:

http://www.vetstreet.com/our-pet-experts/are-dogs-carnivores-heres-what-new-research-says

From that, it seems like they're carnivores with slight adaptation that allows eating grain in a pinch, but that's not their ideal diet. So, raising dogs for meat doesn't seem like it makes a lot of sense, since they're more inefficient at digesting grains than herbivores, and feeding them meat to produce meat is also inefficient. Of course, some people probably just like the taste, and that's the cultural factor, even if they have to be fed way more grain per pound of dog meat than a cow would require.Jonny Mnemonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06516458612879773986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388504906915444063.post-25336252393764601192018-02-10T07:12:32.839-06:002018-02-10T07:12:32.839-06:00Dogs seem a little irrational to eat to me. Why not just eat the meat you were feeding the dogs? Cows, on the other hand, eat grass, so you're converting grass to meat/protein by eating cows. (But they're pretty hostile about eating cows in India - seen people there attack trucks just on the suspicion that the truck was hauling cows.) It's all pretty much cultural, what people eat though, of course.Jonny Mnemonichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06516458612879773986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4388504906915444063.post-41284101963126609942018-02-10T07:01:36.173-06:002018-02-10T07:01:36.173-06:00Besides all this, "things" are heating u...Besides all this, "things" are heating up in Syria again - the U.S. bombed the Russians and the Syrians shot down an Israeli jet.

As to your last story, the Koreans [and probably many more cultures in Asia and maybe elsewhere] acknowledge that they eat dog meat and aren't upset about it. We eat cows regularly and they're about the most docile creatures on the planet, make great pets and are caring and conscious beings, so we should probably take our disdain at "eating pets" down a notch or two.
Dogs are easier to raise, don't require as much feed and space, and would be a good food source for inner cities when the food shortages hit.
